Woodpecker Cottage is ideal for couples who are either travelling on their own or together with a larger group of extended family or friends, as it is one of four lovely self-catering properties at Lea Hill in Membury which can accommodate up to 14 people when booked together. The cottage and gardens enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding countryside with excellent walks and cycle routes leading from the front door.
Membury is in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just a few short miles from Axminster and close to the Devon/Dorset border. There is no place more perfect for a relaxing holiday as not only is it surrounded by lush, rolling fields and meadows, but it is also within easy reach of Devon beaches and the ancient Jurassic Coast. If you're patient, you may be lucky enough to see the wild deer that visit the small woodland near the cottages, and birdwatching in the garden or nearby Hawkswood and Thurlbear Wood is always a pleasure. With a myriad of footpaths and bridleways lacing their way through the area, it is effortless to get outside and explore at your own pace.
Axminster is a pretty market town built beside the River Axe. It has shops, cafes (including the River Cottage Kitchen and Deli), boutiques and pubs, and useful transport links including a mainline station on the Exeter and London line. There is a museum of local history so visitors can learn more about the people who shaped the landscape, an art trail, and historic properties like Shute Baron and the Loughwood Meeting House which are both managed by the National Trust. Other nearby attractions include Forde Abbey, the Grade I listed gardens at Bicton Park, the Donkey Sanctuary, and Beer Quarry Caves.
It wouldn't be the perfect holiday in Devon without a trip to the seaside and staying at Woodpecker Cottage means you have lots of choice whether you head to the north coast, or south. Charmouth and Lyme Regis are a 20-minute drive from the cottage. The former is mainly shingle and excellent for fossil hunting, while the latter is a mixture of sand and shingle and adjoins the 14th-Century harbour. Drive further, and you can see the natural wonders of Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove in Dorset.
All of the cottages at Lea Hill are dog-friendly with both long and short breaks possible depending on availability. Whether you want somewhere peaceful for a romantic escape with your partner, or are on holiday as part of a group but need a quiet place to retreat at the end of the day, Woodpecker Cottage is perfect.
