With miles and miles of sandy beaches, secluded coves, bustling seaside towns and a stunning coastal path, Devon really does have it all when it comes to seaside holidays. If you have an active family seeking a new adventure each day you can’t beat the north Devon coast. Keen surfers will love the large sandy beaches at Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton. With plenty of surf schools to choose from, beginners and advanced surfers alike will soon be enjoying the thrill of catching a wave. If you would rather try your hand at sailing you can cruise around the Taw Torridge Estuary from the whitewashed fishing village of Appledore. Or hire a paddle board at Watermouth Cove, have a go at coasteering in Ilfracombe or explore the caves and go for a wild swim at Broadsands Beach near Combe Martin.
If you are looking to hang your wetsuits up for the day, visit the charming fishing villages of Lynton or Lynmouth. Meander around the quaint narrow lanes, explore the independent shops or sample the delights of the many tea rooms. If you want to make space for the next cream tea enjoy a stroll along the South West Coastal Path or explore the dramatic scenery and spot the wild goats at the Valley of Rocks.
For a more gentle seascape, head to the beautiful coastline in south Devon. Embrace bucket and spade days on the beach, go fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast or enjoy a comfortable deckchair and a good book as you soak up the sun, sea and scenery. Bigbury on the Sea beach is ideal for family days out. Not only are the shallow waters and rock pools perfect for mini explorers but kids will love the sea tractor that takes you across to Burgh island at high tide. If you are feeling adventurous, windsurfing and kitesurfing are popular here too. Or why not have a go at diving in Teignmouth or visit Devon Windsurf and Canoe Centre just down the road at Newton Abbot.
If you prefer a traditional seaside town you should stay in Paignton, Torquay or Brixham on the English Riviera. When the sea has washed away your sandcastle you can visit Paignton Zoo, Splashdown waterpark, Britain’s largest model village or even go back in time and explore prehistoric caves. Any romantic couples should look no further than the chic seaside town of Salcombe. After a morning on the sheltered beach at Hope Cove you can enjoy browsing boutique shops and art galleries before sipping a gin and tonic watching the sun set over the sea. Seafood lovers will be spoilt for choice with the large number of fantastic restaurants. The infamous Winking Prawn and the vibrant Crab Shed should not be missed!
Bring the whole family and stay in a large holiday house on the beach, treat yourself to a luxury harbourside apartment for two, or wake up in a cosy fisherman’s cottage to the sound of waves gently lapping on the shore. Many of our (Devon) holiday cottages by the sea also welcome dogs so your four-legged friends can come too. Whoever you decide to being and wherever you decide to stay, Devon’s stunning and varied coastlines provide the perfect backdrop for a very happy holiday by the sea.
