Holidays in Kingsbridge

Devon’s verdant countryside is more than merely photogenic, it produces some of the UK’s best food, making a self-catering holiday in Devon a gastronomic pleasure. Kingsbridge is a retail hub for the South Hams with a regular market in Town Square on Tuesdays all year round, an extra Thursday market from Easter to Christmas, and a Farmers’ Market on the first and third Saturday of the month from 9 am-1 pm at Kingsbridge Quay. It doesn’t matter if you miss a market day as Fore Street has an excellent variety of independent shops and businesses that open at least six days a week.

When it comes to food there is a great choice from the local butchers, bakers and grocers. The cafes and restaurants, including the waterfront Crabshell Inn, appeal to all tastes and budgets.

Work off all of that delicious food with a long walk. The River Runs Wild Walk is a favourite route that leaves from nearby Loddiswell and follows the length of the River Avon to the sea at Bantham. Alternatively, go to the Blackdown Rings from where you can enjoy far-reaching views across the South Hams. The South West Coast Footpath is popular with walkers all year long, while cyclists and mountain bikers can choose from trails between Salcombe and Marlborough or a challenging ride from East Prawle to Cousins Cross. Being close to the coast allows holidaymakers to surf, with surf schools and board hire available to those who need it. There are two golf courses within a 15-minute drive of the town centre and several stables who offer guided horse rides.

Kingsbridge is less than four miles from the coast meaning that beautiful beaches are only a short drive or a cycle away. The shallow water of North Sands near Salcombe is a favourite with families, while South Sands is a great spot for paddle-boarding and sea kayaking. East Portlemouth has good amenities and it is possible to walk around the headland to Mill Bay at low tide. Gara Rock is the ideal spot for beachgoers who are happy to forego amenities for peace as it is quiet and secluded. Other beaches within easy reach include Hope Cove, Thurlstone, Bigbury-on-Sea and Bantham.

Being bored isn’t an option when you holiday at Kingsbridge. There is always something fun to see and do whether it’s taking a ride on the South Devon Railway, having a day at the races at Exeter Racecourse, saying “hi” to the residents at the Donkey Sanctuary or shopping and sightseeing in Plymouth. Popular annual events include the Two Moors Festival, Dartmouth Food Festival and the Teignmouth Jazz Festival.

Despite its many wonderful attributes, Kingsbridge remains something of a secret from many of those who visit Devon making it a fantastic year-round holiday location.
