Gardener's Cottage is in a quiet, secluded spot in Exmoor National Park. Its elevated location provides breathtaking views over the Heddon Valley towards the coast, which is about a mile from the door. Zip link beds can be set up as either a king or two single beds, making the cottage perfect for friends as well as couples or solo adventurers. The kitchen is well-equipped for self- catering but, with the historic Hunter's Inn just a 10-minute stroll downhill from the cottage, you always have a welcoming option if you prefer not to cook.
The cottage is on a private estate in the Heddon Valley, where little has changed in the landscape for generations. There are gorgeous walks from the door, including to the Heddon River where you will have the rare chance to spot otters in the wild and see Britain’s most endangered butterfly, the High Brown Fritillary. A favourite footpath winds its way beside the river and through the valley to the beach at Heddon's Mouth. The South West coast path leads around the headlandsand along some of the highest sea cliffs in the UK, with their dramatic scenery.
Mountain biking and horse riding are two excellent alternatives to walking and hiking, with visitors and locals making excellent use of the extensive network of trails and bridleways to get further than they can do on foot. Another option is to book a seat on a 4WD Exmoor Safari with a local guide who can take you to secret and hard-to-reach sights that few people see.
Time spent exploring nearby Lynton and Lynmouth is a delight. The pretty seaside village of Lynmouth is connected to the clifftop, Alpinesque Lynton by a Victorian funicular train which has conveyed sightseers between the two for 130-years. Start at the bottom by admiring Lynmouth's historic harbour and pretty fisherman's cottages before scaling the heights to Lynton's shops and cafes where a Devon cream tea (cream first, then jam in Devon) is a treat worth every delicious calorie. Other places for a day trip include Clovelly, Porlock, Porlock Weir and Dunster. Admire themagnificent waterfalls at Watersmeet or pretend you're the lord or lady of the manor at Arlington Court where the National Carriage Collection resides.
Gardener's Cottage is one of just three properties on this private estate. Each is quiet and entirely self-contained and can be booked on its own or together with one or both of the others to accommodate extended families or groups of friends. Gardener's Cottage is at the end of a long private driveway with no passing traffic to mar the the ground floor of a charming stone and wood chalet-style property.
You’ll immediately feel welcome as you cross the threshold into the open-plan living area with comfortable furnishings and a log burner for cold weather. There is a SMART TV with freesat channels and access to subscription and catch up TV.The cottage has superfast WiFi throughout. Tucked away in the corner, ideal for romantic meals a deux, is a dining table and two chairs.
Outside: Guests are encouraged to settle back and put their feet up even before they enter, with a covered terrace which has a table and bench where you can sit and admire the view. There is off-street parking and a secure shared garden with picnic tables. A shared laundry room has a washing machine and a tumble dryer.
Additional Information: All utilities, WiFi, bed linen and bath towels are included. Infants are welcome and a travel cot (no bedding) is available on request. Short breaks are possible, depending on availability. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome through prior arrangement. Smoking is not permitted. A refundable damage deposit of £75 will be requested at booking. This will cover any damage to the property and other incurred costs (e.g. additional cleaning) during your stay. If there is damage then a partial refund or no refund is given, dependent on the extent of the damage. If there isn’t any damage, then the deposit is refunded in full.
