Active holiday makers won’t have to leave the saddle, whether it’s on their mountain bike or their horse, as they explore the picturesque countryside. It’s a rambler’s paradise with miles of paths unspoiled by development and tacky tourism. Pack a picnic and stay out all day walking, climbing, riding, or simply sitting and being part of the landscape.
Learn about Devon’s history at Okehampton’s historic sites including Okehampton Castle, Finch Foundry, and the Museum of Dartmoor Life. Wine lovers should definitely make time to tour Eastcott Vineyard, or at least visit the cellar door and sample some of their award winning produce. Even if you’re staying in a self-catering cottage you’ll appreciate the fantastic pubs and restaurants in the area.
Exeter is an easy drive from Okehampton. Take a day to explore its magnificent cathedral and shop ‘til you drop in this small but perfectly formed city. Exmouth and Teignmouth are to the east, while the beautiful beaches of Bude and the Cornwall Heritage Coast are to the west. Families with kids should definitely check out Simmons Park and meadows if they need somewhere for the younger ones to let off some steam; or take a scenic drive south of town to Becky Falls Woodland Park.
Wherever you look around Okehampton you’ll find something fun, beautiful, historic, or a mixture of all three. It has all the ingredients you need for a brilliant holiday.
