Life by the Water - Salcombe is an estuary town, built around the area where streams from Kingsbridge, Frogmore, Baston, Bowcombe and Sherford meet and flow into the English Channel. Sailing is not merely a popular leisure activity - it is woven through many aspects of the town and is a vital thread in its fabric. In addition to sailing boats, it is not uncommon to see motorboats, stand-up paddle-boards, kayaks, ferries and surfboards all making good use of the estuary and coastal waters.
Part of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) as well as being a Marine Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Marine Nature Reserve, Salcombe has much to offer nature lovers. A wealth of flora and fauna flourish in the uniquely beautiful environment, making it ideal for those who love being outdoors, whether on land or in the water. Salcombe’s two beaches are called North Sands and South Sands, with other nearby beaches including those at East Portlemouth, Hope Cove, Thurlestone and Soar Mill Cove.
The magnificent South West Coast Path winds its way past Salcombe to offer an excellent way to explore by foot, complete with breathtaking views. The Salcombe to Bolt Head walk is especially lovely, as are the routes heading to Snape’s Point, Bolt Head and Gara Rock. The region is so highly regarded for the quality of its food that a brand new Salcombe Food and Drink Trail is underway, ready to be rolled out in 2020.
