Holidays in Salcombe

Life by the Water - Salcombe is an estuary town, built around the area where streams from Kingsbridge, Frogmore, Baston, Bowcombe and Sherford meet and flow into the English Channel. Sailing is not merely a popular leisure activity - it is woven through many aspects of the town and is a vital thread in its fabric. In addition to sailing boats, it is not uncommon to see motorboats, stand-up paddle-boards, kayaks, ferries and surfboards all making good use of the estuary and coastal waters.

Part of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) as well as being a Marine Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Marine Nature Reserve, Salcombe has much to offer nature lovers. A wealth of flora and fauna flourish in the uniquely beautiful environment, making it ideal for those who love being outdoors, whether on land or in the water. Salcombe’s two beaches are called North Sands and South Sands, with other nearby beaches including those at East Portlemouth, Hope Cove, Thurlestone and Soar Mill Cove.

The magnificent South West Coast Path winds its way past Salcombe to offer an excellent way to explore by foot, complete with breathtaking views. The Salcombe to Bolt Head walk is especially lovely, as are the routes heading to Snape’s Point, Bolt Head and Gara Rock. Cycling is another excellent way to get around, and there are a variety of routes around the Salcombe Kingsbridge Estuary.

Food and Shopping - Salcombe has a fantastic array of places to eat and drink, as well as delis and shops selling delicious local produce for self-catering visitors to cook back at their cottage. The region is so highly regarded for the quality of its food that a brand new Salcombe Food and Drink Trail is underway, ready to be rolled out in 2020. In the meantime, visitors can stop by the Salcombe Distilling Company where there is a shop selling their unique blend of gin, and a bar where you can enjoy refreshing cocktails with a view.

Salcombe Attractions - There is plenty of fun to be had away from the water. Attractions in Salcombe and South Devon include the Salcombe Maritime Museum, Coleton Fishacre, Buckfast Abbey and the Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary and Butterfly Farm. Trago Mills combines a shopping centre with a leisure park to provide something that keeps everyone happy, while Pennywell Farm is always a favourite with children.

The South Hams region has several lovely towns apart from Salcombe, including Dartmouth and Totnes. Take a ride on the South Devon Railway, go pony trekking through Dartmoor National Park, or shop and sightsee in Plymouth and Torbay.

The scope for fun is only limited by your imagination when you have a holiday in Salcombe. Having easy access to peaceful beaches and calm waters is incredibly relaxing, while the abundance of so much delicious food and drink will satisfy even the heartiest appetite. Salcombe is perfect for everyone, no matter what your age or interest. Come and see for yourself why it’s one of the most beautiful spots in Devon.
