Hallsands Beach House is a phenomenal beachfront holiday home in South Devon, sleeping six guests with the sea almost at the garden gate. The location is extraordinary, but it's the way the house has been designed around it that really stands out. Sea and beach views appear from every room, from the ground-floor king-size bedroom to the twin room's arched window upstairs. The super-king bedroom goes one step further, with dual-aspect windows and its own balcony facing the water. Downstairs, the sitting room looks across Start Bay, while outside there's a furnished terrace and barbecue for days when nobody wants to stray far from the shore.
You can leave the car where it is for some of the best days here. Hallsands has its own dog-friendly shingle beach, and the South West Coast Path passes the property on its way along this wonderfully rugged stretch of Start Bay. Follow it north for around 15 minutes, and you'll reach Beesands, a traditional fishing village with a long shingle beach backed by freshwater Widdicombe Ley. The Cricket Inn overlooks the sea and serves food, while Britannia at the Beach is known for locally caught seafood. Walk in the opposite direction towards Start Point and the coast becomes wilder. Great Mattiscombe Sand is a lovely reward for the walk, while Start Point Lighthouse occupies one of the most dramatic headlands in South Devon. Hallsands itself has a fascinating history: much of the original fishing village was lost to the sea following devastating storms in the early 20th century, and its ruins can still be seen from the coast path.
Beach choice is certainly not a problem. Lannacombe is a small sandy cove around 1.5 miles away, while the long sweep of Slapton Sands starts at roughly the same distance in the other direction. Blackpool Sands, about five miles away, has clear water, a beachfront café and watersports facilities. The coast around Start Bay and the Salcombe Estuary also provides plenty of opportunities to get onto the water. Sea kayaking trips operate from neighbouring Beesands, with paddleboarding, sailing, boat hire and other watersports available around Kingsbridge and Salcombe. For keen walkers, simply following another section of the coast path may prove more tempting; routes here climb above secluded coves before dropping back towards the water, with some superb views along the way.
South Devon has another side when you're ready to swap beach shoes for shops and restaurants. Kingsbridge is the nearest sizeable town, with independent shops, cafés and a market alongside its estuary. Salcombe offers sailing, sandy beaches, and a strong food scene, while Dartmouth is worth a day in its own right for its harbour, castle, and boat trips along the River Dart. Dartmoor offers a complete change of scenery. Yet Hallsands Beach House has one considerable advantage over many places you might visit during your stay: when the day's exploring is finished, you come home to the water. Open the door, look across Start Bay, and the reason you chose this stretch of Devon is right there in front of you.

A second snug occupies the top floor, providing another quiet space to read, relax or watch television. Please note that the stairs leading to this floor are steep, and young children should be supervised.

The front garden has a lawn and furnished terrace with a barbecue, with views that make Hallsands Beach House so special. There's another lawn at the rear. Private driveway parking for up to four cars.
Additional Information: A well-behaved dog is welcome by arrangement. A cot and high chair are available - please request when booking. WiFi, utilities, bed linen and bath towels are provided. Guests need to bring beach and dog towels if they are required. The gardens are not enclosed, and children and pets should be supervised.
