About Clanaborough

Clanaborough is as delightfully Devonian as a scone with a dollop of clotted cream topped with jam. The 400-year old thatched cottage sits surrounded by rolling green South Hams countryside, four miles from beautiful sandy beaches like Bigbury. There is space for six people in three bedrooms, but the traditional layout makes it as comfortable for couples as it is for families.

There is so much to do around Clanaborough that being bored is not even a remote option! One of the best ways to enjoy the scenery is on foot, and there is a three-mile circular route that takes you through the verdant country lanes around the cottage. The hedgerows are bursting with life during every season, and a favourite pastime is to count the multitude of birds, insects and animals you can see on your walk. Alternatively, drive to Start Point lighthouse and enjoy the spectacular cliff-top scenery as you walk to Prawle Point, or hike around Bolt Head which also offers impressive sea views.

Bigbury is the nearest beach to the cottage. It is popular with families for its fine sandy beach and safe waters. Visit at low tide to walk out to Burgh Island and enjoy a pint at the Pilchard Inn. With miles of sensational coastline fringed with beautiful beaches, it is easy to discover a new one every day of your holiday. Hunt for seashells at Cowry Cove, or escape the summer crowds at Armer Cover, which feels wonderfully remote even on a sunny day in August.

Dartmoor National Park is only a few miles from Clanaborough, making this area ideal for cyclists and horse riders as well as ramblers. Dartmoor is well known by climbers for its magnificent granite tors which provide a good challenge that is rewarded by incredible views.

Devon is a fantastic holiday destination whatever the weather, and there are lots of rainy day activities to enjoy. Plymouth is a lively city with a rich naval history and great shopping, or you may prefer nearby Modbury which is more modest but utterly charming. Kingsbridge is good for food shopping, especially if you go on the first or third Saturday of the month when the farmers’ market is held in the morning, or drive to Totnes, Salcombe or Dartmouth.

One of the most appealing aspects of Devon is how it manages to squeeze so fun much into a relatively small space. There is a wealth of diverse activities to enjoy so pack your bags and enjoy it all from the comfort of Clanaborough.

Accommodation Comprises:

Clanaborough has been in the same family for one hundred years, and they are adept at welcoming guests. The cottage is full of original character including cob walls that are nearly a metre thick, low doorways and the odd creaky floorboard. It is completely authentic and absolutely wonderful. It is not possible to imagine a more perfect English country cottage than Clanaborough.

Downstairs:

  • Two living areas leading off the main hallway - a spacious living room and a more intimate sitting room. The owners have provided a variety of books and family-friendly games for guests to enjoy during their stay.
  • The sitting room has several armchairs facing the open fire, and there is a large French window that overlooks the garden and lets in lots of natural light.
  • The living room is larger than the sitting room, with a sofa and armchair (additional armchair available), a log burner, and the original beams on display. It doubles as the dining room and there is a wooden dining table and chairs to seat up to six guests.
  • Kitchen next to the living/dining room so meals will reach the table piping hot. It is well equipped with all the utensils and equipment you need for self-catering, and there is ample crockery and cutlery.

Upstairs:

  • A flight of wooden stairs (with shallow treads and hand rail) leads from the entrance hallway to the double bedroom. There is also a second stone staircase from the living/dining room (with wide treads but no hand rail).
  • The largest room is in the middle. It has three single beds and is appropriate for guests of any age.
  • The smallest room has a single bed, a bedside table and reading light. As with the triple room, it is at the front of the house and has original wooden floorboards and a sloping ceiling.
  • Master bedroom which can be accessed either via the triple room or from a separate flight of stone steps that lead from a hallway behind the living room. It has a comfortable double bed.
  • Family bathroom is located between the single and triple rooms with a bath including shower attachment, WC and hand basin.

Outside: Clanaborough's garden is great for children, being grassy, flat and enclosed. There are garden games and a barbecue to enjoy on summer evenings, and the fence is secure. There is off-street parking at the front of the cottage with space for up to four cars.

Additional Information: Clanaborough is a period property with many original features, although the cottage has an efficient heating system, every room has its own thermostat, WiFi and Freeview television channels. Utilities are included, together with a welcome supply of coal and basket of logs. No smoking.
