About Drift Cottage

Drift Cottage offers you, your family or your friends the perfect place for an unforgettable holiday in Devon. The period cottage sits beside the harbour at Turnchapel, with guests enjoying sensational views from both decks, two bedrooms, the living room and the dining area. There is space for up to six people to sleep in three very comfortable bedrooms and lots of period features that include a fireplace rescued from a Victorian warship. There are two pubs - the Boringdon Arms and the Clovelly Bay Inn, a cafe and shop all within walking distance, and you're only steps from the private pebble beach where you can launch your paddle-board, kayak or go swimming. A mooring is also available should you bring a boat. Trust us when we say that it's so good, you'll have a hard time leaving!

Turnchapel is colourful, pretty and peaceful. It is only five miles from Plymouth yet, with its waterfront location and relaxed atmosphere, it feels a world away from the bustle of a city. Hire a boat or kayak and set sail around Batten Bay or on Hooe Lake, or stroll around the point and admire the incredible views from Mount Batten Tower. Plymouth is so close that you can easily dip in and out of its shops, museums, restaurants and nightlife. The city has a rich maritime heritage with lots of family-friendly and all-weather attractions to offer something fun no matter what time of the year you're here. The regular ferry service between Mount Batten and the Barbican is a wonderful way to avoid city traffic.

Local attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, Dartmoor Zoo, brand new Box Museum, Mount Edgecumbe House and Country Park, Saltrham House, and the beautifully restored art deco Tinside Lido. Stretch your legs on a coastal walk around places like Jennycliffe and Smeaton's Tower, or set yourself up for the day on one of the area's many beautiful beaches that include Bovisand and Wembury.

The cottage is within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is close to Dartmoor National Park, giving visitors an almost unlimited choice of footpaths, cycling routes and bridleways to explore. There are two golf courses within a 10-minute drive with three more within 20 minutes of the cottage. You won't struggle to stay active when you stay here as the back door literally opens up on to the South West Coast Path. Equally, it is easy to stretch out on a lounger on your deck and laze the day away watching ships and yachts sail past. Staying at Drift Cottage means you can plan your perfect holiday.

Location (Devon)

Accommodation Comprise:

Drift Cottage is an 18th-Century former Pilot Boat House that has been updated and extended to offer a high standard of accommodation over two levels. The owners have done a fantastic job of creating a fresh, modern holiday home with a luxurious feel which appeals to 21st-Century families without losing the character and charm that makes this property so special.

Downstairs:

  • There are nautical touches throughout the cottage, including in the dining room where round mirrors echo portholes and a glazed door opens onto a wooden deck. There's a dining table with seating for six.
  • Extending back from the dining room is the modern kitchen which is extremely well equipped and fitted with quality appliances that include a dishwasher and Nespresso machine.
  • Master bedroom with a kingsize bed, bedside tables with reading lights, and proper storage. Glazed doors open onto the deck and add to the sense of space and luxury. The modern ensuite has a shower, heated towel rail, WC and a handbasin. You can hear the waves as you fall asleep!
  • Bathroom with a bath and shower, heated towel rail, WC and a handbasin.

Upstairs:

  • Huge open-plan living area with high ceilings, solid oak beams, solid oak floorboards and underfloor heating, and glass doors that open onto a large balcony which overhangs the water and frame the sensational harbour views. A fireplace reclaimed from a Victorian warship is a charming feature. There's nothing nicer than curling up on a deep sofa in winter, warming yourself by the fire as you watch a film or read.
  • Second double bedroom with a queen-sized bed and French doors that open onto a large private balcony where there is seating.
  • Twin bedroom with two single beds from an old yacht and garden views. The simple decor makes this room comfortable for either children or adult guests.
  • Family bathroom with a shower over the bath, a heated towel rail, WC and a handbasin.

Outside: There is plenty of outdoor space that includes two balconies with loungers, armchairs and a barbecue with outdoor worktops and a dining table for six guests. The cottage also has a level area of good sized lawn and a covered deckhouse made from a 1930’s yacht which can seat six or doubles as an amazing office space.

The private pebble beach is accessed by steps from the garden and is great for skimming stones or crabbing or fishing as the sun goes down.

There is a private parking space suitable for two cars. Be advised that the drive down to the cottage is steep and narrow, there is also a car park in the village.

Additional Information: All utilities, WiFi, bed linen and bath towels are included. There is a Sonos Music system throughout the cottage and Netflix on the television. The owner can also provide an umbrella and towels if required. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome with the owner's prior agreement. Smoking is not allowed.
