Cuckoo's Nest is on the family-run Countryways farm near Umblerleigh in Devon. The owners have turned a once-rustic barn into a fantastic holiday cottage sleeping six people in three bedrooms. Stone walls, timber floors and centuries-old oak beams are brought into the 21st Century with stylish furniture and a modern kitchen for self-catering holidays. It's extremely popular with families of all ages who love the deck with the hot tub and having 17 acres of woodlands to explore.
There are six individual self-catering cottages at Countryways. Book them together if you're hosting a family reunion or special celebration. The on-site facilities include a games room and a play area, and guests can partake in seasonal fun like pressing autumn apples and feeding spring lambs. There's also a bar open most Tuesday and Thursday evenings. You don't have to leave the farm to have a wonderful holiday. There are shops, cafes and pubs in Umberleigh village, three miles from Countryways. If you can't find what you want there, climb aboard the mainline train to Barnstaple or Exeter. There is also a service to the Bideford Railway Heritage Centre for train buffs.
Exmoor National Park is nearby, with a mix of river estuaries, fields and farmland, woodlands, and coast and beaches. It's gorgeous in all seasons and perfect for a walk, pony trek or bike ride. Who knows - wild Exmoor ponies may join you as you explore. Also nearby is the mostly traffic-free Tarka Trail. Running for 180 miles along an old railway line from Braunston to Meeth, and is part of the Devon Coast to Coast Cycle route. Hikers also have the option of the South West Coast Path, about half an hour's drive from the cottage.
The BIG Sheep, RHS Garden Rosemoor, and Arlington Court & the National Trust Carriage Museum are family-friendly local attractions. There are two golf courses nearby, and you're only 30 minutes from Westward Ho! and the North Devon Coast.
