Catboat Cottage is a stone's throw from the beach. The 200-year-old holiday cottage started life as a fisherman's cottage and is mere steps from the River Torridge in Appledore. The owners have lovingly restored its period features and given them a fresh twist that suits modern families. It's almost TARDIS-like in size, appearing as a simple terrace from the front yet opening up into a spacious home with four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and space for eight people to stay in comfort. You can walk to the beach, cafes, and the waterfront Beaver Inn in a minute or two, making this location ideal for a relaxed coastal holiday.
Appledore is a charming town with winding lanes, pretty coloured cottages, and views over the water towards Instow. Unlike some coastal villages in Devon, Appledore's fishing and boatbuilding heritage is not a thing of the past. Many residents work in the shipyard or take their trawlers out daily to fish in the waters off the North Devon coast. It's worth paying a visit to the excellent North Devon Maritime Museum to find out more about the town's past. However lovely the town, most of your time will be spent at the beach, accessed from a slipway only metres from the cottage. It's heavenly in any weather, with no two days being the same. The South West Coast Path is also close, with the stretch around the Taw and Torridge Estuary being incredibly scenic. The seven-mile stretch from Appledore to Northam Burrows is primarily flat and passes an ancient Viking battleground. The Tarka Trail and the National Trust Baggy Point routes are beautiful alternatives.
As well as sunning yourself on the shore at Appledore, you can enjoy the coast at Westward Ho!, Instow, and Saunton Sands. Local attractions include The Big Sheep, The Milky Way Adventure Park and North Devon Wake Park. Learn to surf, windsurf and SUP, or book a fishing or sightseeing boat trip. Gardeners will enjoy RHS Rosemoor, Tapley Park, Arlington Court, and the Castle Hill Gardens.
It's easy to see why North Devon has been a favourite family holiday destination for generations. The owners of Catboat Cottage love Appledore so much that they set up this charming home-away-from-home here, enjoying that it's welcoming and friendly all year round, with thriving local industries that add to the charm and authenticity of its historic lanes.
