About The Count House

The Count House is situated beside the River Tamar in Weir Quay, warmly welcoming couples, families, and friends within its beautiful stone walls. Its name originates from its former role as a place where tin ore was assessed and measured, playing a key role in Devon and Cornwall's prosperous mining industry. Having undergone a modern renovation, guests staying in the two-bedroom, one mezzanine holiday cottage can now enjoy contemporary luxuries such as underfloor heating and efficient insulation, all while appreciating the original single glazed sash windows and original exposed trusses. The cottage accommodates up to six people, with space for a baby. A travel cot and high chair is available, and one of the bedrooms can be configured with either two single beds or one super king-sized bed to suit your needs.

Weir Quay is so peaceful and picturesque that it can be hard to imagine it in its heyday when it bustled with boats picking up goods on their way to Plymouth. Once the 19th-century equivalent of a motorway, the river here is now tranquil, providing a habitat for birds and wildlife in an area protected as part of a National Landscape (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). There are walks from the property linked to the Tamara Way or take one of the beautiful circular walks along the river and through the surrounding countryside of the Bere Peninsula. Dartmoor is right on your doorstep for those who prefer an adventurous walk on the wild side, with ample opportunities for mountain biking, climbing, and horse riding.

No matter your age or interests, you'll find plenty of enjoyable activities during your stay at The Count House. Anglers will appreciate being just ten minutes away from seasonal grayling, trout, and salmon fishing on the River Tavy, with day and weekly permits readily available from nearby angling clubs. Sailors and paddleboarders can explore the local waterways. With nearby attractions like the UNESCO World Heritage Site and living museum of Morwellham Quay, the National Trust's Cotehele Tudor manor house, and charming towns such as Tavistock, Calstock, and Plymouth to explore, you may feel relaxed, but you'll never be bored.

**The property is single glazed due to being a historic grade 2 listed building and during colder weather the windows will produce condensation, we have provided a dehumidifier for each room for our guests comfort, there are also 2 Karcher devices which we do politely ask our guest to use to collect the condensation if and when necessary.

Arrival and departure times.  Our guest are welcome to arrive anytime after 4 pm and departure time is up until 11 am  Please do let us know if you would like to adjust these time and we will do our best to accommodate your request.  Thank you.

Accommodation Comprises:

The Count House is a period stone cottage spread over two levels with a mezzanine above the first floor. Small, well-behaved dogs are welcome by arrangement. Please let the owner know when booking if you're bringing your pet.

Downstairs:

  • The master bedroom has a king-sized bed and a Smart TV.
  • A second bedroom features two full-sized single beds or a 6ft-wide superking, depending on your requirements. The owner can provide a travel cot if you request this when booking, though you'll need to bring your own cot bedding.
  • The family bathroom has a shower, separate bath, a WC and a hand basin.

Upstairs:

  • Triple aspect windows allow daylight to flood into the living room, making it feel spacious and inviting in all types of weather. There are two leather sofas on which to lounge and watch the Smart TV, and a log burner for extra warmth and a cosy atmosphere in winter.
  • At the far end of the living room, which has exposed original oak beams, a dining table seats four people.
  • A sleek, modern kitchen is fitted with all of the appliances and utensils you will need to cook and serve meals for four. A massive American-style fridge/freezer will fit all of your groceries, and a dishwasher removes the need for washing up.
  • There is also a mezzanine above the kitchen/living area. This can only be accessed on request for potential extra sleeping arrangements.

Outside: The cottage's garden has a terrace with seating near the house, and a lawn with a pond. There is parking for two cars.

Additional Information: Utilities, WiFi, bed linen and bath towels are provided. Guests will need to bring beach towels and cot bedding if necessary. The mezzanine is accessed by a ladder from the kitchen. The pond is unfenced so children and pets should be supervised. Smoking is not allowed.

**The property is single glazed due to being a historic grade 2 listed building and during colder weather the windows will produce condensation, we have provided a dehumidifier for each room for our guests comfort, there are also 2 Karcher devices which we do politely ask our guest to use to collect the condensation if and when necessary.
