The Count House is situated beside the River Tamar in Weir Quay, warmly welcoming couples, families, and friends within its beautiful stone walls. Its name originates from its former role as a place where tin ore was assessed and measured, playing a key role in Devon and Cornwall's prosperous mining industry. Having undergone a modern renovation, guests staying in the two-bedroom, one mezzanine holiday cottage can now enjoy contemporary luxuries such as underfloor heating and efficient insulation, all while appreciating the original single glazed sash windows and original exposed trusses. The cottage accommodates up to six people, with space for a baby. A travel cot and high chair is available, and one of the bedrooms can be configured with either two single beds or one super king-sized bed to suit your needs.
Weir Quay is so peaceful and picturesque that it can be hard to imagine it in its heyday when it bustled with boats picking up goods on their way to Plymouth. Once the 19th-century equivalent of a motorway, the river here is now tranquil, providing a habitat for birds and wildlife in an area protected as part of a National Landscape (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). There are walks from the property linked to the Tamara Way or take one of the beautiful circular walks along the river and through the surrounding countryside of the Bere Peninsula. Dartmoor is right on your doorstep for those who prefer an adventurous walk on the wild side, with ample opportunities for mountain biking, climbing, and horse riding.
No matter your age or interests, you'll find plenty of enjoyable activities during your stay at The Count House. Anglers will appreciate being just ten minutes away from seasonal grayling, trout, and salmon fishing on the River Tavy, with day and weekly permits readily available from nearby angling clubs. Sailors and paddleboarders can explore the local waterways. With nearby attractions like the UNESCO World Heritage Site and living museum of Morwellham Quay, the National Trust's Cotehele Tudor manor house, and charming towns such as Tavistock, Calstock, and Plymouth to explore, you may feel relaxed, but you'll never be bored.
