The Gamekeeper's Cottage is a dreamy retreat where couples or independent travellers can cocoon themselves in comfort. The charming holiday cottage was formerly part of the Buckland House estate. It has its own private garden and access to the owners three acres of garden and 14 acres of private woodland. Although the cottage feels, and is, wonderfully rural, it is close to some of North Devon's favourite attractions.
Buckland Filleigh is a tiny hamlet with a central location that makes it ideal as a base from which to explore. There are beautiful walks and cycling routes from the door, including the traffic-free Tarka Trail which is just a 10-minute bike ride away and provides an easy route between Meeth and Braunton. If you're not feeling especially energetic, then the two-mile walk to Sheepwash and the Half Moon Inn may be more appealing. Alternatively, stroll around the beautiful grounds of RHS Rosemoor or Castle Drogo, the latter of which is a National Trust property.
Dartmoor National Park is only half an hour from The Gamekeeper's Cottage. This natural wilderness is a veritable playground with miles of footpaths, exciting mountain bike trails and 160 granite tors that make it a favourite destination with climbers. Horse riding is a popular way to explore, with local stables arranging pony trekking for all abilities.
The cottage is less than an hour's drive from the North Devon and the North Cornwall coast which puts beaches like Saunton Sands and Bude close enough for a day out. Pretty seaside villages like Appledore and Clovelly are an excellent substitute for a walk along the coast followed by lunch or afternoon tea.
There is a clutch of market towns offering a fantastic array of places to shop. These include Okehampton, Barnstaple and Tavistock, while the cathedral city of Exeter is also comfortably within an hour's drive.
The owners will be on-site to welcome you and answer any questions you have about the local area, but will otherwise leave you to enjoy the privacy and solitude of the cottage's peaceful setting.
