About Gamekeeper's Cottage

Gamekeeper's Cottage is similar to the style of traditional lodges found in the Swiss Alps. Yet, you would never mistake the sensational coastal and valley views as being anywhere other than Exmoor National Park. The cottage is tucked away but has spectacular views and is surrounded by wilderness, a mile from the coast and just a short walk from the historic and welcoming Hunter's Inn in the Heddon Valley. The holiday cottage can accommodate up to four people in two bedrooms and is popular with couples as well as with families and friends. It is one of three equally charming cottages on a private estate and can be booked on its own or together with one or both of the other cottages to accommodate extended families and friends (enquire with the owner for rates).

Martinhoe Cleave is in the Heddon Valley, a landscape which has remained unchanged for generations. Offering visitors a rare chance to see wild otters and the very rare high brown fritillary butterflies in their natural habitat. Walk from the cottage into this beautiful valley, alongside the Heddon River through the wooded valley to Heddon's Mouth beach, or around the cliffs along the magnificent South West Coast Path. With 600 miles of footpaths, bridleways and cycling routes, there is no shortage of gorgeous views to discover. You can explore on horseback, if you want a change from cycling or hiking. Alternatively, book a guided Exmoor safari to discover secret and hard-to-reach corners of the park that few tourists manage to see.

The Swiss style of the cottage feels entirely appropriate when you visit nearby Lynton and Lynmouth. The clifftop town and seaside village were nicknamed "Little Switzerland" by Victorian holiday-makers (or, more likely, a savvy Victorian tourist board!) because of the clean air and clifftop location. A gravity-powered funicular train has been transporting people since 1890 and is a must-do while you're in the area. Lynmouth is the older of the two, with traditional fisherman's cottages, an historic quay and a tower. Lynton's clifftop location provides it with fantastic views. It is an excellent place to buy provisions, eat out, browse boutiques and enjoy a scone with lashings of clotted cream in one of the numerous tea shops and cafes.

During your stay, you can visit places that include Clovelly, Porlock and Porlock Weir. The waterfalls and woodland at Watersmeet are beautiful, as is the National Carriage Collection and gardens at Arlington Court. Exmoor, and particularly Gamekeeper's Cottage, is a wonderful place to be adventurous or slothful, depending on your mood.

Gamekeeper's Cottage is a pretty wood and stone cottage with accommodation over two levels. It is one of only three cottages and reached via a private driveway with no noise from passing cars to disturb the peace.

Downstairs:

  • The living room is light and airy, thanks to the diamond paned glass front door and windows and it is comfortably furnished with a squashy leather sofa and an armchair. There's a Smart TV with Freesat channels and access to subscription and catch up TV, and a dining table with four chairs.
  • Preparing meals is easy in the fitted kitchen, which is well-equipped with crockery, utensils and appliances that include a dishwasher.
  • Spacious bedroom with a kingsized bed and a single bed, bedside tables with reading lights, and a dressing table with a mirror.
  • Family bathroom with a walk-in shower, bath, WC and a handbasin.

Upstairs:

  • Climb the spiral staircase to the first-floor landing where a glazed door opens onto the balcony which has unobstructed sea and valley views.
  • A twin bedroom benefits from beautiful views and has two single beds. PLEASE NOTE: All occupants of the upstairs bedroom must be capable of using an escape window and ladder to exit the property in the event of fire: no unaccompanied children are permitted to sleep in this room.

Outside: The balcony has chairs where you can relax with a drink and appreciate the views over the valley towards the sea, while the grounds have picnic tables and benches. There is a shared laundry room with a washing machine and a tumble dryer. The cottage has off-street parking for two cars.

Additional Information: Utilities, Superfast WiFi, bed linen and bath towels are provided. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome through prior arrangement. Short breaks are possible, depending on availability.   A refundable damage deposit of £75 will be requested at booking. This will cover any damage to the property and other incurred costs (e.g. additional cleaning) during your stay.  If there is damage then a partial refund or no refund is given, dependent on the extent of the damage. If there isn’t any damage, then the deposit is refunded in full.
