About Upper Carlane

Upper Carlane is a proper home-away-from-home holiday rental. It's actually the owner's much-loved holiday home, so you know it's well-equipped for a relaxed family self-catering holiday in Devon. Carlane Court comprises three self-catering cottages. Upper Carlane is the biggest, sleeping up to nine guests in three beautiful bedrooms and boasting an open plan area with a vaulted ceiling and lots of living space indoors and outside. You can walk from the cottage to two pubs (The Tower Inn and the Queen's Arms, both of which serve food if you don't feel like cooking) and a well-stocked community-run village shop. Slapton Sands is only a mile away - close enough to walk or cycle so you can leave the car at home.

Unlike some of the beaches in South Devon, family-friendly Slapton Sands rarely feels busy. Its curved sandy beach is good for swimming, paddleboarding, canoeing, windsurfing and surfing, and there are regular lifeguards stationed there in summer, making it popular with families. Walk along the shore to Torcross and Slapton Ley for a change of scene or around Slapton Ley Nature Reserve. Having a diverse and beautiful landscape so close is one of the highlights of a holiday at Carlane Court.

Many families who visit Upper Carlane are perfectly happy to fill their time within a mile or two of the cottage, there is a great deal to do close by. The beach and coastline offer plenty to keep everyone happy, especially if it's sunny and warm. However, with the whole of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the doorstep, you have a wealth of options on offer. The English Riviera and attractions like Paignton Zoo and pier, Torquay's Big Wheel, Brixham and Berry Head are just over half an hour's drive from the cottage. There are cycling routes and footpaths, including the stunning South West Coast Path, golf courses and activity centres, all within easy reach of Slapton and Upper Carlane. Take a ride on a steam train or a sightseeing boat, walk around a stately home or castle, and admire the beautiful gardens that thrive in Devon's delightful climate. Dartmoor National Park is only half an hour away to open up even more opportunities for exploration and fun.

Upper Carlane is completely self-contained and private. You can book it with other properties at Carlane Court to accommodate extended families and friends.

All accommodation is on one level without any large steps so may be suitable for those with limited mobility.


  • Enormous living area with a vaulted ceiling, limed oak floors and exposed beams. There are multi-aspect windows with garden views. A central fireplace allows guests to benefit from the warmth of the log burner from both the living room and the dining area.
  • The living area has plush seating, a thick rug and a TV with a DVD player.
  • Sunroom with relaxed seating and a TV. A sofa opens into a double sofa bed to accommodate two adults.
  • The kitchen/dinning area has a wonderful modern country vibe with high-quality appliances that include a dishwasher and a coffee machine, as well as plates, cutlery, glassware and serving platters. The oval dining table is roomy enough for everyone, and a highchair is available.
  • Master bedroom with a double bed, bedside tables with reading lights and proper storage.
  • Twin room with two full-sized single beds.
  • Bunk room with a pull out bed, sleeping up to three guests.
  • Family bathroom with a bath and shower attachment, WC and a handbasin.
  • Tiled shower room with a shower, WC and a handbasin.

Outside: Upper Carlane has a private sheltered garden with lawn and garden furniture. It also has a private driveway and parking.

Additional information: Utilities, WiFi, bed linen and bath towels are all provided. Guests to bring beach towels if they are required. There is a supplement for using the sofa bed. A laundry room shared with other cottages has a washing machine. Carlane Court is a no-smoking property. Unfortunately, dogs cannot be accepted in this property (Lower Carlane Court offers dog-friendly accommodation). The property offers single level accommodation without sizeable steps so may be suitable for those with limited mobility (please note: bathrooms are not wheelchair accessible and are standard sizing) - please speak to the owner to discuss your requirements before booking.
