Quakers Cottage is a pretty annexe addition to a 14-Century farmhouse, providing comfortable accommodation for four people in two bedrooms. It is one of four charming self-catering properties at Lea Hill, just outside of Membury village and only a few miles from Axminster in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Ignoring the lure of the beautiful Devon countryside is impossible. Close to the Devon/Dorset border and within easy reach of Somerset, there are a wealth of footpaths and bridleways along which to walk, cycle or explore on horseback. The South West Coast Path, Somerset Levels and Vale of Taunton are all close enough to enjoy on a fantastic day out. Family-friendly bike rides can include the shady lanes around Budleigh Salterton and Exmouth. If that sounds a little too energetic, perhaps a round of golf or a gentle hack through the countryside on horseback is more your speed.
Having the coast so close opens up a world of fun on the water and guests at Quakers can make the most of it by sailing, fishing, kayaking, surfing and paddleboarding. Coasteering is very popular - imagine swimming under the arch at Durdle Door, or stopping to catch your breath in a cave once used by pirates!
A busy day is sure to build a healthy appetite, and there are plenty of excellent places where you can dine out, including the famous River Cottage restaurant and cookery school in Axminster. The market town is a fantastic destination if you do not feel like cooking, whether you want a lazy brunch in a relaxed cafe, a traditional Sunday dinner in a country pub and everything in between.
The Jurassic Coast is not to be missed. This ancient landscape has UNESCO World Heritage Status due to its unique characteristics, with Lyme Regis and Charmouth being great for finding fossils and just a 20-minute drive from the cottage. Being close to an expansive stretch of coast means there is a beach to suit everyone whether you like to have a cafe and amenities close by or you prefer deserted stretches of sand that can only be reached on foot.
Nearby attractions to add to your holiday itinerary can include The Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth, Dinosaurland Fossil Museum, Bicton Park and the Axe Valle Wildlife Park. Beer Quarry Caves is a great wet-weather attraction as it is mostly underground, while the rides and play areas at Crealy Adventure Park will keep the kids happy all day long.
Quakers Cottage is perfect for couples and families as it is in a quiet location that is close to some of the best sights and attractions in the south-west. It can be booked on its own or together with one or more of the other cottages on site to accommodate groups of up to 14 people.
