South Barn is on the Isle of Sheppey off the coast of Kent, with far-reaching rural views over fields towards the English Channel. The spacious self-catering barn has been transformed into three welcoming holiday cottages, each with space to sleep four people in two bedrooms. The holiday rentals are on Connetts Farm, where the owners have retired but still keep 13 acres of fields and gardens for guests to enjoy. South Barn cottages are ideal for couples or families. They can be booked together to accommodate extended families and groups of friends.
A holiday on the Isle of Sheppey is like stepping into a time before mass development when the land was valued and nurtured for what it could provide rather than what could be built on it. The owner's farm adjoins their son's, and guests can walk through the fields to the cliffs for fantastic views of the English Channel. Birdwatchers flock to the island all year round for the opportunity to watch harriers, golden plover, short-eared owls, heron, egrets and many more species not only along clifftop walks but also at the Elmley Marshes Nature Reserve and the Swale Nature Reserve, which is a designated marine conservation zone.
Being an island means there's plenty of opportunity for water-sports. Sun yourself on sandy beaches like Leysdown-on-Sea, and Minster Leas. Cycle along the flat routes of the Sheerness Way and the Isle of Harty Trails, or walk through tranquil countryside and along the pretty coastline. Local attractions include the Eastchurch Aviation Museum, the Rose Street Cottage of Curiosities, the Guildhall Museum Queensborough, and the Minster Gatehouse Museum.
Eastchurch is just over a mile from the cottage with two pubs and mini-supermarkets where you can pick up the basics. Slightly further away, the Brambledown Farm Shop is the perfect place to buy fresh fruit, veg, bread and meat for your barbecue. There are supermarkets and more amenities in Queenborough and Sheerness and a good pub, The Ferry House at Harty.
The Isle of Sheppey is tiny - only nine miles long and four miles wide, so nothing is very far from anywhere, and it's easy to explore with London, Canterbury, Rochester, Maidstone and the coastal towns of Whitstable and Thanet all within easy driving distance. The cottages at Connetts Farm are available for bookings all year round.
