North Barn consists of two comfortable holiday cottages, each sleeping six people in three bedrooms. The spacious self-catering rental is perfect for families and can be booked together to accommodate extended families and groups of friends. The cottages are on Connetts Farm on the Isle of Sheppey, with direct access to footpaths and cycling routes leading to the coast and through the countryside. The owners are retired farmers who keep a small flock of free-range chickens on their 13 acres. Guests enjoy beautiful views from the house and the garden in a tranquil location that is only a mile from Eastchurch and a 20-minute walk from cafes, shops and the Castle Inn.
The Isle of Sheppey is off the coast of Kent, close to where the Thames flows into the English Channel. It's not large, measuring a mere nine miles long and four miles wide, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for with character. Being small also means it's perfect for exploring on foot via the Sheerness Way Route that passes Barton's Point, Coastal Park and Sheerness Beach. Alternatively, bring or hire a bicycle and enjoy leisurely rides along the Sheerness Way Cycle Ride and the Isle of Harty Trail.
Attractions on the Isle of Sheppey include the Elmley National Nature Reserve and the Swale National Nature Reserve, where birds, flora and fauna all thrive in the protected conditions. The nature reserves are a particular favourite with birdwatcher in the autumn, when flocks of migrating birds descent on the island to rest on their way to warmer climates. Being an island means Sheppey has beaches. Spend a day sunning yourself at Leysdown or Minster, or walk through the neighbouring farm to the cliffs for stunning views over the English Channel.
Grocery shopping for your self-catering holiday is as simple as stopping by the farm shop in Brambledown for fresh meat, bread, fruit and veg. Eastchurch has two mini-supermarkets, and there are some great takeaways at Halfway Minster, three miles from North Barn. There are supermarkets five miles away in Neats Court, with more choice in Sheerness. If you want a meal out, head to the tranquility of Harty, home to The Ferry House Inn. Further afield for a day trip out is Rochester with its cathedral and quirky shops to browse, popular seaside towns like Whitstable, Broadstairs, Ramsgate and Margate and the City of Canterbury. Kent also has more than its fair share of castles and country houses (definitely put Leeds Castle and Dover Castle on your holiday itinerary!) and easy access to London and the Chanel if you want to spend a day in France.
