Salvin House is perfect for your next self-catering holiday in Cumbria. The period stone holiday cottage is in the attractive market town of Alston in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close to the Lake District and unforgettable sights and amazing attractions. It is conveniently within walking distance of shops, cafes and the friendly Cumberland Inn and only a short stroll from the River South Tyne. The current owners lovingly restored the Georgian holiday home to offer a welcoming home-away-from-home for families and friends, sleeping eight people in four bedrooms with accommodation over two levels.
Alston is a historic market town surrounded by gorgeous countryside popular with walkers, cyclists and mountain bikers, and visitors who prefer to tour this area from the comfort of their car. It's a wonderful example of a thriving rural community, boasting a family-run butcher and an excellent fish and chip shop together with five friendly pubs, two supermarkets, and independent shops and tea rooms. Everything you'll need for a relaxed self-catering stay is within a few minutes walk. You only have to cross the road to reach the South Tyne Trail, a long-distance multi-purpose route from Garrigill to Haltwhistle. Other local attractions include the High Force and Ashgill Force waterfalls, the Nenthead Mines, and the Epiacum Roman Fort and visitor's centre.
Further afield, day trips can include seeing Hadrian's Wall, taking a journey on the South Tynedale Railway, learning more about the lead mining industry that helped to shape this landscape at the Killhope Wheel Museum, or driving 40 minutes to beautiful Ullswater to admire the lake from the comfort of a Victorian paddle steamer. Penrith, Carlisle, Gretna Green and the beaches of the Solway Coast are all under an hour's drive, while Newcastle Upon Tyne is not much further.
Salvin House is available for bookings all year round.
