Riverside View boasts one of the best positions in Appleby, if not the entire Eden Valley. The pretty cottage overlooks the River Eden and the Grade-II listed St Lawrence's Bridge from the garden and the living room, and you can sit comfortably and enjoy the views in every season. There is space for up to four people to sleep in two bedrooms, making Riverside View ideal for couples or families with older children. The riverside market town is not only beautiful, but it also has shops, friendly pubs, and a Saturday morning farmers' market all within walking distance.
Appleby-in-Westmoreland is an excellent destination for a self-catering holiday, particularly if you enjoy walking or cycling. In addition to its famous annual horse fair which takes place over three days in early June, the town has a full calendar of fun things to do that include a carnival, agricultural show, sporting days and cultural events.
It doesn't matter what time of year you visit Appleby-in-Westmoreland because there is so much to see and do. Local attractions include Appleby Castle and the Appleby Hub, and visitors can also orientate themselves with a walk around town using a map from the Tourist Information Centre at Moot Hall. Walking is a favourite way to explore the countryside, and there is a beautiful circular walk from Appleby to Ormside. Other popular footpaths go through Jerusalem, along the Ullswater Way, and to High Cup, with a more gentle option passing through the gardens of Acorn Bank, a National Trust property close to Temple Sowerby.
Mountain bikers and road cyclists favour Appleby and the Eden Valley for the variety and quality of the trails. The Pennine Cycleway goes through Appleby, and you only have to go to nearby Penrith or Kirkby Stephen to join the long-distance C2C route. Bridleways and mountain bike trails cross through the countryside and places like Askham, Ullswater, Orton and Alston are all within easy reach as are the North Pennines (AONB), Lake District National Park and the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Day trips can include a journey on the Settle-to-Carlisle Railway, shopping in Penrith, admiring beauty spots like the Aira Force Waterfall, mooching around markets, fishing, and enjoying a leisurely lunch in a country pub with a great view. The owners of Riverside View have paid attention to the small details to help ensure their guests have everything they need for a relaxed and enjoyable holiday.
