Woodpecker Cottage is a 4-Star wheelchair-friendly holiday cottage with hot tub in the rural hamlet of Dudleston near Ellesmere in the Shropshire countryside. It's on the family-run Castle Farm (not a working farm), where they also have Nuthatch Cottage, glamping pods and a charming shepherds hut. The cottage sleeps five people in three bedrooms with a private enclosed garden (and outdoor hot tub!). It's an ideal layout for families, though it also suits couples and friends as there are two bathrooms and accommodation is over two levels. This is a fantastic location for being outdoors and active, but it also suits people who love easy days sightseeing, picnicking and relaxing in beautiful rural surroundings. The nearest pub is at St Martins one and a half miles away and the nearest supermarket is two miles away.
Dudleston is just five miles from the pretty town of Ellesmere that has grown up around a glacial lake. At its heart are winding medieval lanes lined with half-timbered Georgian buildings housing various independent shops, cafes, restaurants and other local businesses. A market has been held weekly for more than 800 years, with the Victorian Market Hall hosting it since 1879. More shops and amenities are only a few miles further away in Oswestry. Despite its long history, there is nothing old-fashioned or stuffy about Ellesmere. It has a vibrant community just five miles from Woodpecker Cottage and is popular with locals and visitors. Lake Vyrnwy and the waterfall at Pistyll Rhaedr are around an hour away, so pack a picnic and make a day of it.
There is always something fun to do or beautiful to see, no matter your interest or the season. Ellesmere is one of nine meres in an area sometimes called the Shropshire Lake District, with other lakes also giving opportunities for swimming, sailing, SUPping, fishing, and birdwatching. Cycle along the Llangollen Canal's towpath to Chirk Aqueduct. Being close to the Welsh border means castles: Chirk, Whittington and Powis are just three of many within reach. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Erddig Hall and Attingham Park are other historic places to see. Chester is only 45 minutes away with fantastic places to eat, drink and shop, an award-winning zoo, and Roman ruins. You can also go to Llandudno, Talacre beach and lighthouse, and Llangollen.
Woodpecker Cottage is a holiday cottage where you can spend hours out and about, seeing and doing something new every day. However, it's also somewhere you can park the car and forget it for a week, walking and cycling through the countryside and enjoying fantastic views. PRICES INCLUDE USE OF THE HOT TUB AT THE COTTAGE. DISCOUNT GIVEN AT TIME OF BOOKING IF HOT TUB NOT REQUIRED.
