The Old Post Office is a welcoming holiday house sleeping eight people in four gorgeous bedrooms with a huge living area. It is in the heart of Montgomery's beautiful Georgian market square, within walking distance of cafes, shops and The Crown Inn pub. If you're planning a getaway to the Welsh Borders with family or friends, this holiday rental is ideal. The central location puts you within easy reach of some of the best walking in both Powys and Shropshire, making it a perfect choice in all seasons.
Montgomery has plenty to offer visitors all year round. Being a border town, there has been a defensive fort or castle here since Roman times. Though it was sacked during the Civil War and never rebuilt, the castle dates from 1223. The stone ruins make a lovely spot to sit with a picnic and admire the panoramic views over Wales and England. When you shop at the Thursday or Saturday market, you'll be continuing a tradition that's held since 1227, when the town was granted its market charter. The Old Bell Museum is an excellent resource to learn about the town's history, and a walk through the church and churchyard is also illuminating.
As lovely as Montgomery is, it is the Welsh Marches that are the star of this show. There is an excellent network of way-marked footpaths and cycling routes, the Montgomery Trails, designed to suit all abilities and help visitors explore. Maps are available at the Tourist Information Box. The Offa's Dyke Path is another fantastic option. All 177 miles of the footpath are wonderfully scenic, with some particularly lovely sections around Montgomery. Try the 7.5-mile route between the cottage and Churchtown, or set out along the canal path and along the banks of the River Severn for a different perspective. Mountain bikers and walkers can also get their kicks in the Shropshire Hills.
Day trips can include shopping and lunch in Ludlow or Welshpool. Visit Powis Castle and Gardens, or spend a leisurely few hours walking and bird spotting around the Llyn Coed y Dinas Nature Reserve. Glansevern Hall and Dolforwyn Castle are two more popular sites, while if you're desperate for a day at the coast, then you're only an hour from Aberdyfi and Aberystwyth.
The Old Post Office owners have done an incredible job not only restoring the heritage property but transforming it into a place that feels indulgent without being fussy, and somewhere families and friends can immediately feel comfortable and at home.
