About The Loft

The Loft is in the heart of Cartmel, within walking distance of the famous square, shops, and friendly pubs like the 450-year old Cavendish Arms. The spacious holiday apartment is on the top floor of an elegant townhouse and sleeps up to four people in two bedrooms with guests also having exclusive use of a private terrace garden. The Loft is ideal for couples, friends or family who want a stylish and comfortable self-catering place to stay that is convenient for the best Lake District attractions.

Cartmel may be small in size, but the village is big on charm and well and truly on any foodies destination wish list. Not only does it have a beautiful medieval priory with lovely stained glass windows, but it is also home to L'Enclume restaurant with its two Michelin stars, Rogans Bistro (also with a Michelin star!) and Britain's tiniest National Hunt Racecourse (which you can see from the living room window) which is home to a handful of hugely popular race festivals and weekend meets each summer. There is a heritage centre in the former prior gatehouse, and a fantastic village shop renowned for, and home to, the famous Cartmel sticky toffee pudding. Footpaths, cycle routes and bridleways lead from the village to the fells and towards the Lake District National Park making it very easy to immerse yourself in this stunning landscape.

Just 15 minutes from The Loft is Lake Windermere, opening up a wealth of fantastic sights and experiences from sailing the waters on a ferry or a Victorian steamboat, to fishing and kayaking. At its deepest, the water in Windermere is 220 feet deep, and it is the most significant natural lake in England. Equally as spectacular as Lake Windermere are the hills and mountains reflected in its surface. You can easily walk for miles without seeing another soul, or throw yourself into your Lake District holiday by visiting popular attractions such as Grizedale Forest, Home Farm where Beatrix Potter created some of her most beloved animal characters, and Holker Hall's magnificent house and gardens (within walking distance of The Loft).

As if this was not enough, the coast is only three miles from Cartmel at Grange-over-Sands, where Morecambe Bay offers even more ways to enjoy yourself on the water. There is a choice of golf courses, stables and bicycle hire places meaning that when you stay at The Loft, whatever your idea of the perfect day looks like, you can turn it into a beautiful reality.

Accommodation Comprises:

The Loft was formerly the servants' rooms of a gentleman's townhouse and occupies the entire top floor.

  • Views stretch over the village rooftops towards the racecourse from the living/dining room, and there is a pleasant window seat where you can sit and watch village life from an elevated position. A pitched ceiling and original beams add to the room's cosy appeal, and the corner sofa is perfect for stretching out and watching TV or enjoying a sneaky afternoon nap. The dining table comfortably seats four people.
  • Everything you need is contained in the kitchen's quirky layout. Thick oak beams contrast nicely with the stainless steel appliances, and there is ample crockery and cutlery.
  • Another window seat is in the bedroom, this one is at the front of the building and overlooks Cavendish Street towards the Priory. There is a kingsized bed and good storage, and an ensuite with WC, heated towel rail and handbasin.
  • The second bedroom has a double bed and ample storage, and both bedrooms have a flatscreen TV (one also has a DVD player).
  • A family bathroom has a walk-in shower with excellent water pressure, WC, handbasin and heated towel rail, as well as a washing machine nicely tucked away in a cupboard.

Outside: Stairs lead down to a private courtyard garden which is styled like an outdoor living room with plenty of seating and a barbecue. There is secure storage for bikes and other sporting equipment.

Additional information: The cottage has electric heating which is included in the price together with WiFi and bed linen. Guests are requested to bring their own towels. Well behaved dogs are welcome with prior agreement from the owner. Smoking is not permitted. Short breaks are possible, depending on availability. No children under the age of seven due to the split nature of the property and low sash windows with window seats in the main bedroom.
