Amazing Views

Can views be extravagant? If so, the Lake District pulls it off with style. Towering mountains, far-reaching fells and enormous lakes that act as mirrors to double the beauty. It's hard to choose just one favourite view, but we have been able to narrow it down to a handful of sights that will make your jaw drop with wonder that there is something so beautiful on the doorstep.

  1. Scafell Pike from the southern point of Wast Water, which has the benefit of being accessible by car.
  2. Anywhere along the circular walk around Loweswater. Wander through the woodland on the western side to see red squirrel, deer and, if you venture from the path, Holmes Force waterfall.
  3. The aptly-named Surprise View from which there is a stunning vista across Derwent Water, Keswick and even as far as Bassenthwaite if the weather is clear.
  4. Friar's Cragg is sublime but popular, and you may find yourself having to wait to get a scenic photograph. Schedule this one for early in the day.
  5. Buttermere's circular path is a flat four-mile loop which rewards walkers with fantastic views in all seasons. It is almost impossible to take an unattractive photo here, and the length of the trail means there is plenty of space to sit and enjoy the view in peace and solitude.

Indulgent Meals

It isn't only writers and artists who take inspiration from the beautiful surroundings of the Lake District. Chefs are also motivated to create, and there are four restaurants with Michelin stars in the Lake District. L'Enclume and Rogan & Co, both of which are in Cartmel, HRiSHi in Windermere, and Forest Side in Grasmere. As you would expect, booking ahead is always recommended.

Alternatively, stay within the privacy and luxury of your holiday cottage and enjoy the skills of a private chef. This option is a stress-free way to organise a special meal to celebrate a milestone event with family and friends or set the stage for a proposal they can't refuse. Keen cooks who enjoy being hands-on will love the vast array of delicious ingredients to buy from farmers' markets and delis dotted around the region.

Extravagant Activities

As much as the Lake District is about hiking, biking and being outdoors, there are also lots of other ways to indulge yourself. Rebalance your soul with a treatment at one of the area's spas and wellness centres, like Aqua Sana in Whinfell Forest or The Relaxation Room near Grange-over-Sands, or take a class at Proper Northern Yoga in Kendal.

Leave the car and head out on a guided tour of the Lake District's favourite attractions. Lake District Walks plan bespoke adventures that precisely fit their guests' requirements, while Mountain Goat has a tour that takes in some of Beatrix Potter's favourite sights including Hawkshead and Hill Top Gardens.

Come away with a lasting souvenir in the form of a new skill like an improved golf swing, mountain biking, cookery, wine appreciation, painting, and fell running.

Whether you are looking for an impressive country house to host a milestone event or a romantic retreat with hot tub for two, the Lake District has it all and how better to enjoy it than from a luxury self-catering cottage with the people that you love the most.
