About The Old House

The Old House is a dream Lake District getaway. Sleeping up to eight people in four bedrooms, it offers fantastic accommodation for families and friends in the only coastal settlement in the Lake District National Park. Dating back some 250 years, the house is in the quiet village of Bootle, just a few miles from Ravenglass and within walking distance of the village shop and pub.

Whilst the Lake District is well known for it's majestic mountains and beautiful lakes, visitors often don't realise that the National Park extends to the west coast. The small village of Ravenglass, which sits where the Rivers Irt, Mite and Esk meet, is a beautifully peaceful spot. Its coastal and riverside location made it a key Roman naval base. You can still explore the remains of the Roman bathhouse, one of the tallest surviving Roman structures in northern Britain. Looking almost modern by comparison is the Victorian Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. Whilst the steam train was once used to transport iron ore and copper, it is now a firm favourite with train enthusiasts and families alike. It's hard not to be enticed by the charm of the narrow gauge railway as it travels through miles of stunning scenery.

The scale of the landscape is astounding, with moorland, fells, and mountains all around. Energetic visitors will relish the challenge of scaling Scafell Pike, England's highest peak, but even a gentle stroll around Wast Water will take your breath away with incredible views for all seasons. If you prefer to explore the area on two wheels there are miles and miles of excellent mountin biking routes. Alternatively, enjoy a horse ride or rent a boat. The infamous Munster Castle is also nearby, where you can explore the haunted castle, visit the birds of prey sanctuary and spend a lazy afternoon meandering through the lovely gardens .

The Old House is a real home from home. The furnishings are comfortable without being precious, and the layout allows guests to either spend quality time together or find a quiet corner where you can enjoy a peaceful read in front of the fireplace or in the garden. It is especially popular with large or extended families and groups of friends.

Location (The Lake District)

Accommodation Comprises:

Accommodation is over three levels, with living areas top and bottom, and the bedrooms in between.

Downstairs:

  • Plenty of seating means there is space for everyone to relax together in the living room, enjoying a film or games night, or just catching up over a drink in front of the log burner. The television has Freesat channels and a DVD player, and the owners have a choice of books for guests to enjoy.
  • The dining room has a traditional style dining table and chairs and a sash window that looks out onto the garden. It is a lovely space in which to eat, whether you are having breakfast or tucking into a full Sunday dinner.
  • Catering for eight people two or three times a day is no simple feat, but the quality appliances and layout of the kitchen makes it easier. The kitchen has a dishwasher and is well-equipped with crockery, cutlery, pots, pans, and utensils. A second dining table in the kitchen is perfect for relaxed meals or to use as additional space for preparing food. The kitchen/diner is lovely and light thanks to double doors that open onto the covered patio and out into the south-west facing garden.

Upstairs:

  • Three of the bedrooms of The Old House are located on the first floor. Two of the rooms have zip-link beds that can be set up either as a 6ft, super-kingsized bed or separated into two 3ft single beds.
  • The third bedroom is a bunk room that is great for kids or teenagers, but which can also be used by adults. All of the bedrooms are comfortable and spacious, with beds made up for your arrival.
  • A family bathroom features a large jacuzzi bath, WC and handbasin.

Top Floor:

  • Any children or teenagers in your party will fight over the top floor bedroom. Not only does it have a futon and a single bed, but it also has a small pool table that converts for use as table football.
  • The second bedroom on the top floor is a snug-come-TV room with bean bags, a futon and a TV with a DVD player.

Outside: The covered patio off the kitchen has a table and chairs, and a permanent awning that provides protection from the midday sunshine as well as any threat of impending rain. The spacious garden is south-west facing and gets sun the majority of the day. A path leads through the garden to the car park so you can walk through the garden to get between your car and the house. Guests have access to a lockable shed in the garden which can be used to store bikes and other sporting equipment securely.

Additional Information: The Old House has central heating and WiFi, and all utilities, linen and towels (not beach towels) are included. Short breaks are possible all year round, with discounts offered for stays of a week or more. Parking is available in the village car park at the rear of the property. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome with prior agreement from the owner. Smoking is not permitted.
