Filey often gets overlooked as a Yorkshire seaside destination in favour of neighbouring Scarborough, but it’s a destination that has just as much to offer visitors. Here are some of our top recommendations of how to spend your time when you visit.
The key attraction in Filey is the incredibly long beach that stretches out the length of the bay and has 5 miles of smooth golden sand. In the summer you’ll find hundreds of families along the coastline enjoying the warm weather and swimming in the sea, whilst the autumn and winter months see the beach dominated by dog walkers and tourists enjoying the peace and quiet of the off-season.
Filey Brigg is another great place to go, located right at the edge of the bay and sticking out into the water so it is only accessible at low tide. You’ll have to time your visit right, but if you do you’ll get to walk out right to the edge of the land and enjoy views of both Filey Bay and the coastline to the north of the town.
In the town itself, there are plenty of gift shops and cafes to visit, along with several classic fish and chip restaurants. Down by the beach to the north of the town is Cobble Landing, where you can watch boats take to the water and enjoy views of rustic beach huts beside classic seaside places to eat and drink.
Spending time on the beach is one of the best things to do in Filey, whether you pick a spot on the sand or walk the impressive length of the bay. Watersports are quite popular for visitors in the summer months, although if you’re looking for somewhere to surf you’ll find better conditions at nearby Cayton Bay.
Filey Golf Course is another popular attraction in the town, partly as visitors can also play footgolf on the course which is a great family activity. Inland, you’ll find a Bird and Animal Park, a Stained Glass Centre and Nature Reserve, so there’s plenty to do both when the weather is dry and when it rains.
Further afield, you have other popular seaside destinations like Scarborough, Cayton Bay, Whitby and Flamborough Head all under an hour’s drive away. Many of these locations are also reachable by train or bus, so no matter how you’ve travelled you can still easily get around the wider area.
The best time to visit Filey is definitely between June and August when the weather in the UK is at its best, as this provides the ideal conditions for spending time on the beach. There are also often lots of local events organised over the school holidays in the summer, so whilst the town can get quite busy on the weekends, you’ll find lots to see and do.
