Holidays in Pickering

Pickering is a bustling market town with lots to offer visitors including over one hundred independent shops, excellent places to eat and drink, a weekly market and a monthly farmers’ market.

Like many towns after William the Conqueror arrived in 1066, Pickering had a Norman castle built to help keep the peace, with the stone building being constructed between 1100 and 1300. The town’s history stretches back even further, with Celtic, Roman and Saxon settlements all thriving in the fertile grounds of the Vale of Pickering. Visitors can learn more about the town’s past at both Pickering Castle and the popular Beck Isle Museum.

A fantastic way to explore the countryside is aboard a vintage steam train. It was the arrival of the steam train that elevated Pickering from a peaceful farming community to a prosperous market town, with the heritage locomotives and carriages of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway still covering 24 miles of breathtaking landscape between Pickering and Whitby. What a way to start a day at the seaside!

Walking is a favourite activity and why wouldn’t it be, with so much beautiful scenery to enjoy. Stride out on thousands of miles of waymarked footpaths across moors, through woodland, beside becks and rivers and along seafront cliffs. The terrain lends itself wonderfully to both road cycling and mountain biking, with Dalby Forest providing fantastic opportunities for the latter.

Beautiful scenery with friendly villages and welcoming country pubs serving a pint of Yorkshire ale await. Head to Scarborough for some traditional seaside fun or explore the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast which encompasses 36 miles of glorious coastline peppered with pretty fishing villages and seaside towns. A day at the coast is within easy reach whether you take the train to Whitby or spend about half an hour in the car to Scarborough. If you love cake then the drive to the Willow Cake Shop (the 2019 'Capital of Cake' Champion) in Loftus, will be a highlight of your holiday.

You may want to plan your holiday around one of the many fun events in Pickering and the surrounding area. One of the most popular is the 1940s Wartime Weekend which is held annually over a long weekend in mid-October, but you may prefer the 1960s weekend in June, the Ryedale Trad Jazz Festival in July or the Christmas Light Switch on that happens on the last Saturday in November. There are events celebrating art to agriculture, making the most of every season.

Wider Yorkshire is yours to enjoy when you have a self-catering holiday in Pickering. The ancient city of York is 26 miles away with a direct bus service from town or a train from nearby Malton. Alternatively, take some time to discover some of the pretty villages and towns dotted around the North York Moors, including Helmsley, Rosedale Abbey, Grosmont, or Runswick Bay.
