About The Hovel

The Hovel is a tongue-in-cheek name for what is a very comfortable cottage. With whitewashed stone walls and climbing roses growing around the door, it is incredibly picturesque, sitting peacefully amongst 600-private acres of the Caerau Gardens just outside of Bala on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park. The two-bedroom property sleeps up to four guests (two adults maximum) in two bedrooms and has a full cinema system. It is a favourite with couples or small families (a couple with two children), many of whom are repeat visitors.

Bala is the perfect place for a get-away-from-it-all holiday. Forget about noisy peak hour traffic, smelly pollution and rushing from task to task. Instead, soak in the peace as you admire far-reaching views of the Berwyn Mountains while relaxing over a lazy breakfast. Around here, every route is the scenic route, and you have all the time in the world to get where you want to be whether it's to the peak of Snowdon or the foot of the Pistyll Rhaedar waterfall. Llyn Tegid, or Lake Bala as it is better know, is the biggest natural lake in Wales at four miles long and a mile wide. Bala is at the northern tip with excellent amenities that include pubs, a waterfront cafe, and two small supermarkets.

Snowdonia is a perfect playground in every season. Favourite activities include hill walking and mountain biking, climbing, caving, horse riding, fishing and golf. Caerau Gardens has a private lake where guests can swim, fish and kayak, there are beautiful walks leading to scenic spots for a picnic and there is a sunken trampoline and a fort, assault course and zip wire in the woods which the kids will love. The owners are happy to lend guests kayaks, fishing rods and mountain bikes, with local businesses also offering equipment hire, tuition and guided activities.

Having fun is easy when you're surrounded by so many different places to visit. You can be at the coast in an hour, breathing in the salty air above Cardigan Bay, admiring the colourful Italianate buildings at Portmeirion or tucking into hot chips by Porthmadog Harbour. Dolgellau is excellent for a morning or an afternoon visit with plenty of cafes and pubs for lunch. Why not scare yourself silly on one of the longest zip lines in Europe at the Zip World Slate Caverns in Blaenau Ffestiniog which is also home at Bounce Below. Closer to home are places like the Llangollen Museum, the National White Water Centre, and Zip World Fforest in Betws-y-Coed.

Starting and ending each day in the idyllic surroundings of The Hovel is an experience you will never forget.

Location (Snowdonia)

Accommodation Comprises:

The Hovel is in part of a traditional Welsh longhouse. Although semi-detached, it is separated from the owner's house by a two-metre thick stone wall and is very private and self-contained. Accommodation is over two levels.

Downstairs:

  • You'll feel right at home in the cosy sitting room which has original beams, plump sofas and armchairs, and a woodburner for cold weather. The bookcase is full of books and there is an excellent range of information about the local area to help you plan your days out. In addition to the TV there is a full cinema system with stunning Monitor Audio for films, Netflix or Wii, and the cottage has WiFi throughout.
  • Take your time over meals in the kitchen/diner. There is lots of space to store food and prepare meals, with appliances including a dishwasher for speedy clearing up. The owners have taken care to stock the cupboards with all of the utensils, equipment, crockery and cutlery that guests need for self-catering.

Upstairs:

  • Start every day by flinging open the curtains to reveal stunning views of the Berwyn Mountains, and end them by snuggling down and falling asleep in the comfortable kingsized bed. This room has quirky angles, original beams, and a bookcase with a variety of books for some bedtime reading.
  • Children love the twin bedroom which has two single beds and a sloping ceiling under the eaves.
  • Relax in the bath and stargaze through the skylight. The bath has a hand-held shower attachment, and there is also a WC and a handbasin in the bathroom.

Outside: The cottage has use of the five acre gardens with its lake and woodland walks.

Additional Information: All utilities, WiFi, sheets and towels are provided. Short breaks are possible all year round, depending on availability. Smoking and pets are not permitted.
