Bodfari is small and pretty, with a traditional atmosphere that feels timeless rather than stuck in the past. Much of the community’s social aspect centres around St Stephen’s Church and the adjacent Dinorben Arms pub, the latter of which is a top spot for a peaceful pint and a delicious home-cooked meal. Bodfari is tiny but manages to squeeze in a village shop, so you don’t have to walk far to pick up the basics.
Just four miles from Bodfari, the market town of Denbigh has everything else you may need for self-catering, including four supermarkets. Although the border between Wales and England is little more than symbolic these days, it was once a line to protect as evidenced by the substantial castle and town walls that have stood for nearly a thousand years. Denbigh is an excellent choice for a day out as, in addition to the castle, it has dozens of listed buildings housing independent shops, cafes and pubs, as well as a farmers’ market every Friday morning.
The Cwydian Range is gorgeous, with hills carpeted with purple heather and, in many instances, topped with ancient hill forts. It is a magnificent place for a walk, particularly with the long-distance Offa’s Dyke Path passing through the village as it stretches for 177 miles from Prestatyn in the north to Chepstow in the south. A beautiful walk to begin your exploration is the 10-mile route that starts in the village and passes along Offa’s Dyke to Moel-y-Gaer, Pen y Bryn and Cefn Du, before making its way to Candy Mill, Ty Draw and back along Offa’s Dyke to the village. Alternatively, it is possible to walk from Bodfari to Hendre via Moel Arthur.
Cycling is another favourite way to enjoy the gorgeous landscape with the hills and moors being popular with mountain bikers who appreciate having facilities like the trails at Coed Llandegla on the doorstep. The four-mile flat Prestatyn-Dysterth Way is ideal for families, as is the Rhuddlan to Rhyl Riverside Path (National Cycle Network Route 84).
Those who crave even more space will be delighted to be close to the mountains and lakes of the Snowdonia National Park.
It is easy to blend city pleasures with countryside charm when you stay in a cottage in Bodfari. The city of Chester, known by the Romans as Deva Victrix, is a relaxed 45-minute drive from the village with the award-winning Chester Zoo as well as fantastic places to shop, eat and drink. Liverpool is not much further away, reachable in around an hour’s drive from Bodfari. Formerly named as both a city of Music and Culture, Liverpool is always buzzing. See the waters of the famous Mersey River, walk in the footsteps of the Beatles, shop until you drop and experience its exciting and glamorous nightlife.
If you want a relaxing holiday where you can rest and recharge in beautiful surroundings without having to forgo the pleasures of historic cities and exciting nightlife, then choose Bodfari for your next holiday.
