About Peanmeanach

Peanmeanach Bothy offers an exciting opportunity to escape and unwind, completely uninterrupted by anything or anyone. Getting there is part of the adventure as the 100-year-old cottage requires you to either kayak or to hike for just over two hours with all of your provisions, taking in the spectacular scenery of the Ardnish Peninsula along the way. There's no running water, no electricity, no bathroom and definitely no WiFi. Unplugging is easy when there are no plugs to start with! With space for up to six people to sleep in two bedrooms, the dog-friendly cottage is perfect for active couples or adventurous families and friends.

Just because you're off-grid doesn't mean there's nothing to do. The landscape around the waterfront cottage is a natural playground with miles of undisturbed coastline that is home to seals, shags and white-tailed sea eagles. The Ardnish Peninsula wasn't always uninhabited, and you will see evidence of the farming and fishing community who once lived here. The bothy was formerly the home of the local schoolmistress, while the remains of a Viking boathouse is visible nearby.

Instead of your day being dictated by alarms and deadlines, you're guided by the sun. Spend long summer days lazing on beaches or walking through the hills and wandering around abandoned villages, returning to the bothy for a simple dinner. The fun doesn't end when the sun goes down. Swap the TV for the brilliance of the night sky where there is zero light pollution to dim the beauty of the stars.

Don't let your dream of a Highland retreat remain a fantasy. With a little effort, you can experience the escape you're craving, detoxing from the digital world, removing yourself from daily responsibilities and giving yourself the ultimate luxury of uninterrupted time in an environment few people are lucky enough to enjoy.

Accommodation Comprises:

The Bothy dates from 1905. It's a simple construction of stone and corrugated iron, with thick walls and a door that opens onto an incredible waterfront view.

  • An estate agent may refer to the basic but the original owners built it for practicality. It's being refreshed with new paint and an efficient wood burner but is still homely rather than hipster. The owners have furnished it with recycled and upcycled items to reduce their carbon footprints, there is a shelf of games and books donated by previous guests, and soft cushions and throws for comfort.
  • You'll adapt surprisingly easily to the lack of running water in the kitchen, which is well-equipped with pots, pans, plates and utensils for self-catering.

  • The bedrooms are basic, with six single camp beds across both rooms. Guests will need to provide sleeping bags and towels etc. Falling asleep under the eaves to the sound of rain on the tin roof will be a treasured memory.

Outside: You don't need to worry about fences because there are no roads or other houses. There are no cars, so no need for parking. Those who arrive by water can drag their boat or kayak onto the sand.

Additional Information: You'll be completely self-sufficient during your stay in Peanmeanach, having to supply food, bedding and towels. Guests need to leave the cottage clean and tidy when they depart for the next guests. Up to two well-behaved dogs are very welcome. Please contact the owner before booking if you have any questions. Short breaks of 2 night minimum available May to October and charged at £40 per night (for the bothy) Monday to Thursday inclusive and £50 per night Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. The Bothy is run on a non-profit basis and all profits are put back into the renovation of the property and others in the area.
