Aonach sleeps up to five people in three bedrooms, with a layout that suits couples and families. It is ideally located for walking and cycling, being in the quiet hamlet of Drumguish and within easy reach of all amenities you need for a relaxed self-catering holiday in the Cairngorms National Park. If you're searching for a natural playground, big sky views and plenty of open space to explore in all seasons, you'll find it here.
Although you'll need a car to get to the cottage, you can easily leave it parked up for the duration of your stay. Mile upon mile of wonderful footpaths are accessible from the door, including an adjacent forest. Guests who enjoy long walks could take the owner’s advice to pack a picnic and set off for Glen Feshie. This area is famous for its hillwalking, including the route through the Lairig Ghru. Mountain biking is another favourite way to explore. Laggan Wolftrax is close, while the Speyside Way goes straight past Aonach leading to Aviemore in the north and Newtonmore in the west. There are trails at Glen Feshie and Inshriach, with more at Rothiemurchus Forest, Loch Morlich and Loch an Eilein. Aonach is a year-round holiday destination. When the weather turns too cold or snowy to walk or mountain bike, you can enjoy the ski-slopes of the Cairngorms half an hour's drive from the cottage, or go an hour further to the Nevis and Lecht range. Aonach has dedicated ski and bike storage with lighting, eBike charging points and a selection of basic bike maintenance tools for you to use.
It's possible to walk for hours without seeing another soul although, if you crave a little company, Kingussie is only three miles away. This friendly town is beside the River Spey and something of a hotspot for outdoor activities. In addition to it’s 18-hole golf course – one of the more challenging of the Highland courses – it’s an excellent place to arrange fishing permits or to follow one of the town’s waymarked trails. There’s a favourite footpath leading from town to the Jacobean Ruthven Barracks. Kingussie has a range of independent shops that include a family-run butcher and a specialist cheese shop, cafes, pubs, a small supermarket and a village shop. Bigger supermarkets are half an hour away in Aviemore.
Even sitting in the garden is a delight. Guests often spot red squirrels and variety of birds, and there's the potential - if you're quiet - to see deer, pine marten and badgers. The fun doesn't have to stop when the sun goes down as the lack of light pollution here means the night skies are simply stunning.
