Living
Croft Cottage is a traditional West Highland holiday home in the village of Onich, about ten miles south of Fort William. It sleeps three across one double and one single bedroom, and has that easy, unfussy feel that suits this part of the west coast. The living room is the kind of space you'll gravitate back to in the evening, especially once the wood burner is lit, while the kitchen is bright and practical with views towards the hills near Ballachulish. Outside, the garden wraps around the cottage, with a patio for sitting out and a quieter bench at the back where you can see down towards Loch Linnhe. It's close enough to the A82 to get out and about without any effort.
Onich is a picturesque village where crofting remains part of its heritage. There are a number of places to eat within a short drive, and the loch is just down the road if you fancy a wander before breakfast or at the end of the day. You can walk to the Inchree waterfalls from the front gate. Cyclists tend to like this spot too, with National Cycle Route 78 passing close by, and there's space at the cottage to store bikes safely. A couple of miles north, the Corran Ferry is an easy way to reach the Ardnamurchan side without a long drive, opening up a very different, quieter stretch of coastline. From the Lochaline Ferry on Ardnamurchan, it's a 15 minute crossing to the Isle of Mull.
Head south and you're quickly into Glencoe, where the landscape shifts into steep ridges and wide, open glens. It's a striking place in any weather and draws walkers, climbers and photographers throughout the year. In the other direction, Ben Nevis rises above Fort William, with routes ranging from steady to serious depending on how far you want to push yourself. The Jacobite Steam Train runs from Fort William to Mallaig, crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct along the way. Mallaig and Oban have regular ferries to various Inner Hebridean islands. Loch Ness is also just over an hour's drive. Closer to home, there are boat trips on Loch Linnhe and some unexpectedly good beaches around Arisaig if you're willing to venture a little further.
