Beautiful Beaches - Staithes is on a hillside with winding cobbled lanes leading down to the harbour. It has always been a fishing town and, although many of the boats coming and going these days are pleasure craft, the unloading of the daily catch of crab and lobster is still a regular sight. The harbour is so picturesque and traditional that the BBC uses it as the backdrop for the popular CBeebies show, "Old Jack's Boat" - a fact that is always a hit with younger visitors.
The sandy harbour shore is dog-friendly all year round and the ideal spot to play and picnic. If you fancy a swim, then wander along the coastline and down the cliff path to Port Mulgrave which is a favourite spot for wild swimming, especially on a sunny morning. A few miles away, Runswick Bay’s sandy beach is popular for a day out, with clean (if chilly!) water and rockpools. It is also suitable for canoeing and beach fishing. Alternative beaches for a day at the seaside include Whitby, where you can rent one of the colourful beach huts that face the water. Slightly further afield, Scarborough has all of the traditional facilities and entertainments of a British seaside resort town.
Walking and Cycling - Being part of the North York Moors National Park means you never have to go far for an incredible countryside view whether you travel on foot or by bike. There are some fantastic walks which show off the beauty of Staithes and the surrounding area. An excellent route for first-time visitors is the Hinderwell Parish Heritage Trail which takes in not only Staithes but also Port Mulgrave, Hinderwell, Dalehouse and Runswick Bay. Other waymarked trails include the Mulgrave Woods and Sandsend Heritage Walk, the three-mile circular Rail Trail from Grosmont to Goathland, and the Mickleby and Ugthorpe Heritage Trail.
Cyclists can take the Whitby to Scarborough cycle path or make their way along the scenic coastal roads. The North York Moors is exceptionally hilly in places, but the challenge is worth it for the uniquely beautiful scenery and far-reaching views. Dalby Forest has an excellent network of trails to suit all abilities (including a 21-mile red trail), along with cafes, picnic/BBQ areas and Go Ape for treetop adventures.
Staithes Attractions and Amenities - It is not only the holiday cottages in Staithes that make it such an excellent choice for a self-catering holiday in Yorkshire but also the amenities. The village is small enough to walk around yet it has four pubs, shops and cafes. Artists have long flocked to the area for the wonderful light and scenery, and there are several galleries showcasing work from local painters as well as an annual art festival every September.
Attractions in Staithes range from the Captian Cook Museum (Cook was a shop apprentice before he joined the navy) to Flamingo Land. Take a scenic boat trip, go sea fishing or, if you like to stay on terra firma, play a round of golf. Further afield you can see waterfalls like Mallyan Spout and Falling Foss, take a ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, or marvel at the scale and opulence of Castle Howard.
Staithes is quaint and traditional but with a modern outlook, and staying here means you are never far from a beautiful beach or a gorgeous countryside view.
