Station Master's Cottage brings together two things that Pickering does exceptionally well: history and easy access to the outdoors. Sleeping four guests and welcoming dogs, this detached Victorian cottage stands opposite the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and a short stroll from Pickering Castle. Steam trains regularly arrive and depart throughout the day, adding to the atmosphere without disturbing the peace. Within five minutes on foot you'll find Pickering's market place, independent shops, cafés and traditional pubs, including The Rose Inn and The White Swan. The cottage's railway heritage runs through the property, with thoughtful nods to its past that guests regularly mention in their reviews. Many return for the simple pleasure of stepping outside to hear a locomotive whistle or watching steam drift above the station rooftops.
One of the joys of staying here is how little driving you need to do. Walk from the front door into Newbridge Valley, where woodland paths, wildflowers and views across the surrounding countryside quickly replace the bustle of the town. The Tabular Hills Trail passes nearby, while Dalby Forest offers everything from peaceful walks and cycling trails to high ropes adventures and family activities. Pickering itself has plenty to keep visitors occupied, from the medieval castle and Beck Isle Museum to independent bookshops, tea rooms and regular markets. Mathewson’s of “Bangers for cash” fame is in Thornton le dale, just 3 miles away. For many guests, however, the highlight is boarding a heritage train opposite the cottage and spending the day travelling through the North York Moors to Grosmont and Whitby.
A week here can be as busy or as relaxed as you choose. Head to Whitby for fish and chips by the harbour, climb the famous abbey steps or browse the narrow streets around the old town. Spend a day on Scarborough's beaches, wander around Castle Howard's magnificent grounds or explore villages such as Thornton-le-Dale, Hutton-le-Hole and Rosedale. Spring brings carpets of daffodils to Farndale, summer fills the moors with purple heather and autumn transforms the forests into a patchwork of gold and copper. At the end of the day, it's easy to understand why so many guests mention returning. Everything is close by, yet the cottage feels pleasantly removed from the crowds.
