Where to Stay in The New Forest

Where is the best place to stay in the New Forest

There are several excellent places to stay in the New Forest, all of which have something different to offer so it depends on what you are looking for.

For a classic New Forest experience, Brockenhurst is hard to beat. Right in the heart of the forest, it is surrounded by woodland, heathland and open countryside, with plenty of walking and cycling routes nearby. It also has a good selection of pubs, restaurants and cafés, making it a convenient base without losing that peaceful countryside feel. Beaulieu is another lovely choice with its historic village, riverside setting and attractions such as the National Motor Museum, Palace House and Gardens, Little Beaulieu and Beaulieu Abbey.

For a livelier stay with easy access to the coast, Lymington is an excellent option. This attractive market town has a bustling high street, independent shops, restaurants and a pretty harbour, as well as ferry links to the Isle of Wight. Alternatively, Burley is ideal if you want to feel tucked away in the countryside, with forest walks and traditional pubs right on the doorstep. The mix of riverside paths, quiet country lanes and beautiful countryside in Fordingbridge also makes this a great spot for walking and cycling.

Wherever you choose to stay, staying in or around the New Forest means you can easily combine peaceful days exploring the countryside with trips to the coast, making it a wonderfully flexible holiday destination.

When is the best time to visit the New Forest

The New Forest is a great year-round holiday destination. The best time to visit depends on what you want from your holiday. The woodland comes alive in Spring, with fresh greenery and colourful flowers, while summer brings longer, brighter days that are ideal for walking, cycling and enjoying the forest at its liveliest. It is also a great time to combine days exploring the countryside with trips to the nearby coast.

Autumn is arguably one of the most beautiful times to visit. The trees take on rich seasonal colours and the forest has a wonderfully peaceful feel. Winter offers something completely different, with quieter paths, crisp walks and cosy pubs providing a welcome retreat afterwards. For fewer crowds and a more peaceful experience, spring and autumn are excellent choices, while summer is perfect if making the most of the outdoors is high on your list.

What are the best things to do in The New Forest

There is no shortage of things to do in the New Forest, particularly if you enjoy getting outside and exploring at your own pace. Walking and cycling are two of the best ways to experience the area, with miles of trails winding through ancient woodland, open heathland and picturesque villages. Look out for the New Forest ponies and other wildlife as you explore, or head to the coast for a change of scenery.

When you're all walked out, there are plenty of other attractions such as the beautiful Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway, which offers over 200 acres of expertly manicured grounds. You can admire the sights on foot or from the comfort of a quaint steam railway. Beaulieu also combines pretty gardens and man-made machines with the National Motor Museum – a must-see for motoring enthusiasts with an interest in some very old classics!

For families, there are plenty of attractions and activities to keep everyone entertained. Visit adventure parks and experience animal encounters, explore gentle woodland walks and enjoy a day by the sea. Lovers of all things nautical should not miss a trip to Buckler's Hard or the pretty coastal town of Lymington. History lovers can discover centuries-old buildings and fascinating local landmarks, while foodies can enjoy independent cafés, country pubs and restaurants showcasing local produce. Sometimes the best thing to do in the New Forest is to simply slow down — find a quiet spot, enjoy a picnic, watch the ponies wander past and take in the scenery.

How to travel to the New Forest

The best way to travel to the New Forest is by car, particularly if you want the freedom to explore beyond the main towns and villages. The forest covers a large area, and having your own transport makes it much easier to discover its quieter corners, visit attractions and combine countryside days with trips to the coast. From London, the journey is usually around two hours, while Southampton and Bournemouth are both within easy reach.

If you would rather leave the car at home there are regular train services to the area from places such as Southampton, Bournemouth and London. Brockenhurst station is a useful gateway to the forest and once you arrive you can explore by bike, on foot or using local bus services. For a relaxing break focused on walking and cycling, travelling by train and hiring bikes can be a great way to explore the New Forest.

New Forest FAQs

How many days do you need in the New Forest?

A long weekend is enough time to see some of the highlights such as discovering the charming villages of Brockenhurst, Burley or Beaulieu, as well as having time to visit some of the area’s attractions or head towards the coast. Four to five days, or a week if time allows, gives you more time to explore at a more leisurely pace and venture a little further afield.

What is the New Forest best known for?

The New Forest is best known for its ancient woodland, open heathland and free-roaming ponies, which give the area its distinctive character. Despite its name, the New Forest is far from new. It was established as a royal hunting ground almost 1,000 years ago. Today, its peaceful landscapes are a haven for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers, with miles of trails winding through woodland, heath and pretty villages. The sight of ponies, cattle and donkeys wandering freely across the landscape is one of the things that makes a visit feel so different from an ordinary countryside holiday.

Is the New Forest good for families?

Yes, the New Forest is a fantastic destination for a family holiday, with plenty to keep children of all ages entertained. The great outdoors is why most people choose to visit. Families can enjoy picnics, nature walks, horse riding and adventures in the forest, while the nearby beaches provide another option when you fancy a change of scenery.

There are also plenty of family-friendly attractions and days out. Visit the iconic National Motor Museum at Beaulieu or treat the kids to a day out at Peppa Pig World or the New Forest Water Park. Alternatively simply let the kids run wild and enjoy the freedom of exploring the outdoors, while parents can make the most of the relaxed surroundings, welcoming pubs and pretty villages. Whether you have toddlers, teenagers or children somewhere in between, there is plenty to enjoy.

Is the New Forest dog friendly?

The New Forest is a fantastic destination for a dog-friendly holiday, with miles of open countryside, woodland paths and quiet tracks providing plenty of space for four-legged visitors to explore. There are countless opportunities for long walks, from gentle strolls through the woods to more adventurous routes across the heathland. Many pubs, cafés and holiday cottages in the area also welcome dogs, making it easy to bring your pet on holiday.

There are a few things to bear in mind when exploring with your dog. The New Forest is home to free-roaming ponies, cattle and other wildlife, so dogs need to be kept under close control and, in some areas, on a lead. As long as you follow the local guidance and respect the wildlife and other visitors, the New Forest is an excellent place to enjoy a dog friendly holiday.

Is the New Forest expensive to visit?

The New Forest can be a relatively affordable holiday destination, particularly if you make the most of the many things you can do for free. Walking through the forest, spotting the famous ponies, exploring the villages, going to the beach and enjoying the scenery cost nothing. There are also plenty of cafés, pubs and restaurants to suit different budgets, so you can choose between a simple picnic or a leisurely meal out.

If you are looking for a last minute getaway we have some great last minute offers available which will also save you a few more pennies!

Are there beaches near the New Forest?

Yes. One of the great things about a holiday in the New Forest is that the coast is only a stones throw away so you can easily combine countryside adventures with a day by the sea. Lymington is a great spot for a stroll around the harbour or visit the beaches at Milford-on-Sea, Highcliffe and Barton-on-Sea. Nearby Christchurch and Bournemouth offer a livelier seaside experience with plenty of places to eat and things to do.
