About The Hayloft

The Hayloft has a rustic feel perfectly suiting its location in the rural Devonshire village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor. The one-bedroom Dartmoor holiday cottage is beautifully furnished for couples and individuals who want a welcoming place to return after a day walking, climbing, cycling and mountain biking through the national park or exploring the beautiful beaches of the South Devon coastline. The property is well-equipped for self-catering, but why not give yourself a night off and stroll to one of the village's two pubs - The Rugglestone Inn and The Old Inn, for a tasty pub meal or walk to the Cafe on the Green for brunch.

Widecombe-in-the-Moor is a friendly place with an impressive church tower, given the village's small size. There's a busy monthly farmers market in National Trust Church House on the fourth Saturday of the month and a craft market every Wednesday. If you're there in mid-September, you'll be lucky enough to visit the traditional country fair - a highlight of the community calendar. Grab your walking stick or hiking poles and explore Hambledown via Church Way and country lanes over Venton Bridge to Chittleford and back through Lower Dunstone. There is a wealth of artefacts from years past strewn around the countryside, including the Dun Stone, where farmers paid taxes and a Saxon well.

Places to go in Dartmoor include Dartmoor Zoo, the South Devon Railway, War Horse Valley Farm, Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre, and The Museum of Dartmoor Life. Once you've hiked, biked, llama-trekked and climbed your way around Dartmoor, head for the coast. The English Riviera beaches of Torquay and Paignton are a 40-minute drive from The Hayloft, with a fantastic array of seaside attractions as well as long sandy beaches. Teignmouth is closer, around half an hour away, with a lido, Victorian pier, and lots of places to eat. The South West Coast Path is spectacular in all seasons with stunning views over the English Channel.

The Hayloft is all stone and wood and country charm, with lots of wood and warm colours that make it welcoming in all seasons.

Accommodation Comprises:

The Hayloft is entirely private and self-contained, with the living space on the ground floor and a mezzanine ensuite bedroom.

  • Sash windows and a glass-paned door show off rural views and let in lots of natural light on the ground floor. Slate, stone and timber reflect the natural surroundings. Warm colours and soft furnishings make the space wonderfully welcoming and homely, and a log burner keeps it cosy in cold weather.
  • Settle back on the leather sofa with the TV, a good book, or the flickering light from the log burner.
  • Linger over meals at the dining table, enjoying the view over the fields as you eat. The owner has included books about the local area and binoculars for bird watching.
  • Knock up a delicious meal for two or plate up a takeaway depending on your energy levels. The kitchen is well-equipped for simple self-catering with a full-sized oven and stove. Glass French doors open into the courtyard garden.

  • Pine stairs lead to the mezzanine bedroom furnished with a double bed, bedside tables with reading lights, and a dressing table and chair by the window to catch the natural light. There is room for a travel cot, which is available on request.
  • A tiled ensuite has a shower, WC and a handbasin.

Outside: Sit outside in your private courtyard, which has a sheltered bench and flowering pot plants. The cottage has off-street parking for one car.

Additional Information: Utilities, WiFi, bed linen, bath towels, and an initial supply of fuel for the log burner are included. A travel cot and highchair are available, though guests will need to bring cot bedding. The owner regrets they cannot accept pets. Smoking is not permitted.
