The Cowshed is in a beautiful location on the outskirts of Moretonhampstead, only a 15-minute stroll from a deli, bakery, cafes and friendly pubs like The Horse and The Union Inn. The converted barn is perfect for a couples self-catering holiday in Dartmoor National Park, although the addition of a sofa bed in the spacious bedroom means that it can sleep up to four people.
Moretonhampstead is a pretty Dartmoor town with excellent amenities and beautiful views. Its proximity to the moors makes it ideal for people visiting the area to walk, mountain bike or explore the leafy lanes by bike. Cycling is superb with some of the best trails in the national park, including the 90-mile Dartmoor Way circular route and the Moretonhampstead to Bovey Tracey cycling trail, either starting in or passing through the town, making it easy to explore (bike storage available at The Cowshed). Dartmoor's varied terrain offers something for everyone in every season. When the weather is fine, the high moors provide panoramic views and a challenging climb, while lower down the forest offers sheltered conditions. Haldon Forest has bike hire as well as a graded route for all abilities, while experienced riders can test their technical skills on the trail between North Bovey and Lustleigh Cleve. The Moretonhampstead Visitor Centre on New Street has more information and maps of local footpaths and bridleways.
Outside of town, the rugged wilderness of Dartmoor beckons. In addition to walking and mountain biking, favourite activities include horse riding, climbing, golf, fishing and wild swimming in the River Teign. Local attractions are many and varied but include Castle Drogo, Bovey Castle Hotel and Golf Course (open to non-residents) and Parke Estate. Further afield, other Dartmoor attractions include the South Devon Railway, Dartmoor Zoo, Buckfast Abbey, stately homes, beautiful gardens and National Trust properties. The coast is about 30-40 minutes drive and the historic city of Exeter also a 25/30 minute drive (Univeristy city).
Dartmoor is a beautiful choice for a holiday at any time of the year, especially when you stay somewhere as peaceful and comfortable as The Cowshed.
