About Higher Blackabroom

Higher Blackabroom is on the edge of the moor, mid-way between Okehampton and Tavistock with the Fox and Hounds pub within walking distance. It's spacious enough to sleep up to seven people in three bedrooms with far-reaching views over the surrounding fields from the cottage. Families and friends will find the house a welcome and comfortable base for exploring.

Dartmoor is somewhere to go when you've had enough of being around people. When you want to escape noise and pollution and the sense of being hemmed in by buildings, the seemingly endless landscape and big skies will restore your soul. Dartmoor National Park's border is only around half a mile from Higher Blackabroom, giving you easy access to walks and a huge choice of places to go. Dartmoor is famous for its unique granite tors that act as both landmarks and climbing spots. Sourton Tor, Great Links Tor and Yes Tor are all relatively easy to reach on foot, and you're likely to spot an abundance of wildlife. For cyclists, there are a vast network of opportunities including the 27-mile Moorland Link. Bike hire is available locally.

Lydford Gorge is two miles from the house. Managed by the National Trust, it is home to the magnificent 30-metre high Whitelady Waterfall. The walk around Lydford Gorge is highly recommended in any season as it always looks breathtaking.

If you would like a day at the seaside, then the beaches of the North Devon coast are under an hour's drive, as are Boscastle, Tintagel and the castle where the legendary King Arthur was born. RHS Rosemoor and the Eden Project are two other favourite options for day trips.

Location (Dartmoor)

Accommodation Comprises:

Higher Blackabroom is a traditional farmhouse with accommodation over two levels.

Downstairs:

  • Open-plan living/dining room with windows overlooking the fields. The seating area has a comfortable sofa and armchairs and a stone fireplace with a log burner. This end of the house is single-storey and the oldest part of the property. There is a large flatscreen TV with a DVD player, and the cottage has WiFi throughout (suitable for email and web search but not streaming).
  • Two steps lead up to the dining area where there is a table long enough to accommodate up to seven guests for family meals.
  • Three steps lead up from the dining room into the kitchen where guests will find all of the equipment and utensils they need for self-catering.
  • Utility room with laundry facilities.
  • Shower room with a shower, WC and a handbasin.
  • Quiet bedroom with a double bed, bedside tables with reading lights and storage. This is a great room for grandparents who appreciate their own space away from children.

Upstairs:

  • Triple bedroom with three single beds, bedside tables and reading lights. The room is dual aspect.
  • Spacious bedroom with zip-link beds that can be set up either as a kingsize bed or two single beds, depending on your preference. There is room for a travel cot.
  • Bathroom with bath, WC and handbasin.

Outside: The amazing views don't stop when the sun goes down as the lack of light pollution makes this area perfect for stargazing. Light the barbecue for lazy outdoor eating, or sit quietly and drink your morning cup of tea to the accompaniment of birdsong. There is plenty of off-street parking next to the cottage.

Additional Information: All utilities, WiFi, fuel for central heating and the wood burner, bed linen and bath towels are provided. A travel cot (no bedding) is available on request. Well-behaved dogs are welcome through prior arrangement. Please discuss with the owner before booking. Short breaks may be possible depending on availability. Smoking is allowed outside.
