About The Hemphouse

The Hemphouse (name after the hemp insulation) is one of three self-catering holiday homes located on a small holding within the boundaries of the Dartmoor National Park, on the western edge. Ideal for families or friends, The Hemphouse can accommodate up to five guests. Larger parties of up to fifteen can also be accommodated if all three properties are rented together providing an ideal venue for groups to holiday together with a good degree of personal space.

Reasonably priced, the cottages provide an ideal retreat for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits with good opportunities on the doorstep for walking, cycling, hiking and horse riding (should you want to bring your horse on holiday, stabling is available). A magical place, Dartmoor offers wild rugged scenery and beautiful countryside to explore - a perfect back drop for any outdoor activity! With the open moor at Cox Tor being easily accessed up a 'no through' lane and just ten minutes away, you have miles of open moorland just waiting to be explored.

Tavistock is one of the South West's most popular market towns and is located just three miles from the cottages. Providing a good choice of interesting and essential shops, restaurants and pubs, plus a local market, riverside park, leisure centre and theatre, there are plenty of amenities and eating establishments within easy reach. There are many pretty villages nearby surrounding both Devon and Eastern Cornwall and a number of National Trust properties and gardens to visit. Peter Tavy is the nearest village and has a church and a 15th Century inn serving good food.

Accommodation comprises:

Ground floor

  • Open-plan living with kitchen, dining and sitting areas, fronted by large windows letting the outside flood in and providing views over the valley and towards Brentor beyond. Complimented by lovely wooden floors and rugs, the sitting area has comfy seating, flatscreen television and a log burner as a focal point with the dining area beyond with table and chairs. This leads into the kitchen area with slate floor, ground level wooden units, fridge, slimline dishwasher, microwave and electric oven with hob.
  • Single bedroom with en-suite shower room including wash basin and WC. The washing machine and tumble dryer are also located in this room.


  • Landing area which has both a double and twin bedroom at each end. There is a futon (which can sleep an additional guest) and also table and chair on the landing providing a place to catch up with emails or to sit and enjoy a quiet moment.
  • Family bathroom with wash basin, WC and bath.

Additional information: The property has solid floors throughout (with rugs) and original exposed oak beams adding to its charm. Central heating provided via a sustainable energy log boiler and log burner. Electricity will be charged at cost price (as will any oil that is used) once the first free ninety units of electricity have been used. Bed linen included in the price and towels are available to hire at an additional charge if required. Stair gates, cot and highchair also available upon request. Bike storage available. Private certified water supply. Parking available for two vehicles. Babysitting available upon request. Well-behaved dogs welcome by arrangement. No smoking indoors, but smoking outside is acceptable. Internet access via WLAN.
