Salterns Cottage is an exceptional three bedroom holiday home recently refurbished in 2021. With the sea marshes on the doorstep, the location of the cottage, which sits within a Site of Special Scientific Interest, is a sanctuary to many species of bird life and could not be more idyllic. Perfect for those who enjoy watersports with direct access via a slipway onto the Lymington River. There is a large garden with sun room with bar, decking area for relaxing and storage for outdoor equipment so don't forget your kayak or paddle-board!
Offering the best of both worlds, Salterns Cottage affords a semi-rural position, yet it is within walking distance to Lymington where you will find a great choice of pubs, restaurants, shops (both big names and boutiques) and marina. It is a boating haven and popular with tourist staying, visiting for the day or just passing through as they catch the ferry to the Isle of Wight.
Lymington sits comfortably between the New Forest and the Solent. The oldest part of town is by the harbour, where winding cobbled lanes lead down to the water, and Georgian buildings now house smart bars, cafes and family-friendly pubs - a great place to walk to of an evening for a drink or meal out. Watersports are easily accessible and if you don't bring your own, you can hire a kayak or a boat for a relaxing few hours on the water, treat yourself to a sunrise SUP or swim at Lymington's outdoor saltwater swimming pool. Opened in 1833, the lido is twice as big as an Olympic-sized swimming pool and the UK's oldest open-air seawater pool. Go early to get your laps in, or take the kids to play on the inflatable obstacle course.
It is possible to have a fantastic holiday at Saltern's Cottage without using a car, even if you are not a water lover. Bicycle hire is available within walking distance of the cottage, helping you enjoy the coastline and the New Forest. You can take a car or passenger ferry to Yarmouth for the day, to visit the Isle of Wight. Lymington also has a mainline train station linking it to Brockenhurst. You can access miles of footpaths and cycling routes around villages with free-roaming ponies and donkeys, through magical woodland, and along designated routes like the Tall Trees Trail. Brockenhurst is only seven miles from Lymington, so it's possible to walk or cycle one way and catch the train back if you are tired.
Attractions to enjoy during your self-catering holiday in Lymington include National Trust Buckler's Hard, which shows how important the New Forest was to the Royal Navy, the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu House, Paulton's Park and Peppa Pig World, and the privately-owned Hurst Castle which is a Tudor fortress and excellent WWII museum. Walk along Hurst Spit for incredible views of The Needles, or take the 30-minute ferry trip from Lymington to see them and the coloured sand cliffs from up close.
Saltern's Cottage is a superb holiday destination for all seasons and will quickly become one of your favourite places.
