Bowerswood is located in one of the loveliest parts of the UK, with so much to see and do.
The New Forest is one of the largest remaining tracts of unenclosed pasture land, heathland and forest in Southern England, where ponies, cows, sheep, deer and even pigs and goats roam freely, including in villages and all over the roads. There are miles and miles of walks, off-road cycling and horse-riding, plus canoeing/kayaking and other outdoor pursuits. And countless countryside pubs and cafes.
The medieval city of Salisbury, just 15 minutes away by car, has its spectacular cathedral built in the 13th century with the country’s tallest spire, largest cloisters and biggest cathedral close. It also houses one of 4 remaining copies of the Magna Carta, one of the world’s oldest working clocks and the grave of former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath. The Market Square, High Street, Fish Row and other streets have delightful cafes, restaurants, bars, shops, museums and theatres. The Charter Market is held every Tuesday and Saturday in the Market Square.
Stonehenge – the legendary prehistoric stone circle – is a 30-minute drive away and there are other ancient sites near Salisbury at Old Sarum, Figbury Ring and Danebury Iron Age Hill fort.
The south coast is only 35-40 minutes drive away with glorious sandy beaches at Bournemouth, Southbourne, Poole and Mudeford (near Christchurch). All have dog-permitted beaches, cafes, shops and fabulous views out towards the Isle of Wight and the “Isle” of Purbeck.
Within a 5-minute drive you’ll find the beautiful village of Downton with its greens, water meadows and thatched cottages. You are not far from the lovely New Forest towns of Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst, the New Forest water park with aqua park and wake-boarding, Moors Valley Country Park with Go Ape, adventure playgrounds, bike hire and steam railway, Paulton’s Park family theme park with Peppa Pig World, Marwell zoo, Longdown Activity Farm, the Snowtrax Alpine Activity Centre, Longleat Safari Park, Beaulieu motor museum, the ancient ship-building village of Bucklers Hard, Hengistbury Head and Bournemouth Oceanarium to name just a few.
There is a post office and convenience store in Woodfalls (15 minute walk, 2 minute drive) while nearby Downton has a Co-op and an Asda on the Move, plus a fish and chip shop, the brilliant Borough cafe, a pharmacy, 2 hairdressers and a barbers, 3 pubs, and a leisure centre with two indoor tennis courts, a sports hall and a pay-as-you-go gym.
The King’s Head pub with excellent food and beers is one minute’s walk down the hill, and the Woodfalls Inn a 15-minute walk in the other direction.
There is a children’s playground and tennis court 3 minutes’ drive away in Woodfalls, and a pay-and-play golf course at nearby Hamptworth with a 666-yard par 6 hole appropriately named “the Beast”, plus a driving range.
We provide a guest folder with everything you need to know about the house and the local area, and recommendations for places to visit and things to do.
