The Herdsman's House is one of the nicest Highland holiday homes you can see. The historic property is in a scenic spot near the River Thurso with tranquil rural views and night skies unpolluted by ambient light. It's so peaceful that it's hard to believe that you're barely two miles from Thurso! The house has recently been refurbished and redecorated and sleeps 12 people in five bedrooms. Fixtures and furnishings are top quality, yet it is convenient for families or friends with lots of space, including a games room and a utility room. Guests love that the house feels boutique without being overwhelmingly fancy.
Thurso is a lively town on the north coast of Scotland, half an hour west of John o'Groats and 90 minutes by ferry to the Orkney Islands. It's a breathtaking part of Britain with a spectacular coastline, a big Atlantic swell, and beaches famous for cold water surfing and kayaking. Thurso has an excellent variety of locally owned shops, bars and other businesses to meet your needs. The local museum has information about life over the centuries, while the gallery showcases the work of artists living in and around Thurso. Thurso has a beach, the ruins of a church and a castle, and a Viking tomb with a tower. Take a drive along a stretch of the North Coast 500, Britain's answer to Route 66, and visit the Wolfburn Distillery or the Dunnet Bay Distillery.
Every walk and bike ride is a joy in Thurso. The landscape is incredible, with both gentle views and dramatic scenery. We highly recommend the route between Scrabster Harbour to Holborn Head to see puffins, orcas, and the Orkney Islands. Anglers will be delighted to know The Herdsman's House has direct access to the River Thurso. The owner can help arrange seasonal fishing rights. Thurso has a golf course, while Reay Golf Course and Wick Golf Club are only half an hour's drive. Other attractions include the Castle of Mey, home of the former Queen Mother and one of the King's favourite childhood holiday destinations.
