About East Barn

East Barn is a superb holiday cottage in a stunning location. The beauty of a holiday in Sussex is that it feels wonderfully rural and remote, yet it is only a 90-minute drive from London and with good access to major roads. You can jump in the car after a stressful week at work and be sitting with a drink, watching a peaceful sunset before you know it! East Barn is one of four beautiful properties on Poppinghole Farm. It spreads the entire first floor of a fantastic barn conversion, sleeping four people in two rooms, with the option of accommodating two more guests on the sofa bed. It is spacious enough for families and friends, yet cosy enough for couples to feel right at home.

There are great pubs within two miles of East Barn, including the historic George Inn and the Salehurst Halt in Robertsbridge. The village also has a well-stocked village store and a small supermarket, and some beautiful black and white medieval houses. Hastings is ten miles away on the coast, offering a more extensive range of shops and amenities. You cannot avoid the town’s association with the famous battle that took place in 1066, but Hastings also has strong links to smuggling and fishing. You can find out more about the area’s history at the Hastings Fishermen’s Museum, the Shipwreck Museum, the True Crime Museum, and Smuggler’s Adventure, which takes you through caves used for storing contraband.

The site of the famous Battle of Hastings is in Battle, next to the ruined Abbey. Standing on the edge of an enormous field, it is difficult to imagine that the peaceful expanse of green was the site of such carnage, with up to 10,000 men dying when William the Conqueror defeated King Harold to change the course of Britain’s history. History aside, Battle is a charming town and a lovely place to stop for lunch or afternoon tea. Other nearby attractions include Bodiam Castle, Leeds Castle, Wilderness Wood and Bedgebury Pinetum, Pashley Manor Gardens, and beautiful towns including Rye, Royal Tunbridge Wells and Tenterden.

East Barn is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and there are many incredible opportunities for walking and cycling, including through the South Downs National Park and The Seven Sisters. The farm has two private lakes for guests to fish and a fabulous indoor swimming pool and a spa. However you prefer to relax, East Barn is the ideal place in which to unwind and recharge.

Location (East Sussex)

East Barn is one of four holiday properties on Poppinghole Farm. Each is private and can be hired on its own or, depending on availability, together with others to accommodate larger groups. East Barn is all on one level, being on the first floor of a converted oak-framed barn built in the traditional Sussex style. It is beautifully finished to provide a high standard of accommodation for up to six people in two bedrooms.

The owners have included additional luxuries such as a welcome hamper brimming with locally sourced produce and top quality bed linen. You will feel pampered from the moment you arrive but, just in case that is not enough, you can also book a treatment at the farm's Elemis spa.

Accommodation Comprises:

  • Open-plan living with exposed beams, a brick fireplace with a log-burning stove, and large comfortable sofas, one of which opens out to provide a bed for two adults. The walls are painted in a soft cream shade that is both calming and uplifting as it amplifies the natural light which floods in through the glass French doors that lead onto the balcony that overlooks the courtyard.
  • A dining table sits in front of the French doors and is a lovely place to have breakfast on a sunny summer morning.
  • The fitted country-style kitchen includes quality appliances such as a dishwasher, ceramic hob, double oven and coffee maker. It is ideal whether you want to cook from scratch, or heat up some delicious goodies from the local farm shop.
  • The master bedroom is dual aspect with windows overlooking both the farm and the courtyard. It features a luxurious king-sized bed, and an en-suite with a WC, handbasin, and bath with shower attachment above.
  • The second bedroom has a super-king bed which can be unzipped to provide two single beds. It has an en-suite with shower, WC and handbasin.
  • Both bedrooms and the sitting room have a television with satellite channels, while the sitting room also has a DVD, iPod docking station and digital radio.

Outside: The properties face onto a paved courtyard with a beautiful fountain centrepiece. Guests have shared use of the heated indoor swimming pool and access to a laundry room. There is ample off-street parking. In addition to being a wonderful retreat, Poppinghole is a working farm and an exciting place to be during lambing season. Two well-stocked lakes provide the perfect place for anglers, and numerous footpaths lead from the farm for leisurely country walks.

Additional Information: Strictly no smoking in or around the cottages, farm buildings, courtyard or swimming pool. Short breaks may be possible depending on availability - please enquire with the owner. All utilities, linen and towels are provided for four guests. There is a surcharge for linen if the sofa bed is required. As it is a working farm, the owners regret they cannot allow pets.
