Shepherds Patch is surprising, because whilst it looks the sweetest and cosiest of thatched cottages, it actually comfortably accommodates large parties of up to ten guests in five bedrooms. Sitting in one of the most beautiful and dramatic coastal areas of South Devon, this delightful cottage is well placed in the picturesque village of Thurlestone in the South Hams, just half a mile from the golden Blue Flag beach and sea.
Picture post-card pretty, Thurlestone is a dream of a Devon village with its gorgeous thatched cottages, ancient church, village shop for provisions, traditional inn for a pint and cliff-top golf course. Surrounded by glorious undulating countryside, the village is perfect for a relaxing holiday as well as a base for exploring the area and its many attractions.
For those who enjoy outdoor activities, bring your bike along and enjoy leisurely cycling along the flower-filled lanes in the warmer months, or lace up your walking boots and explore the South Devon Heritage Path, accessible in the village.
Thurlestone has two beaches so plenty of space to lay your towel. Children will love exploring the rock pools of Thurlestone Sands, the smallest beach near the golf course with its fascinating arched rock (which the village takes its name from). The other beach also offers a nice mix of sand and pebbles and is popular with those who enjoy windsurfing, canoeing and lazing, and is further round the coast towards South Milton.
This popular part of the South Hams has plenty of other beaches including Bantham, Hope Cove and Bigbury (all within easy driving distance) as well as attractions for day trips out. Take a trip to Burgh Island, a famous writing retreat for Agatha Christie; the Salcombe Estuary (a popular haunt for sailors with fine restaurants); Kingsbridge with its interesting boutiques to browse; Totnes, Dartmouth or Dittisham; and the Dartmoor National Park. For those wanting some culture, there are many art galleries and exhibitions, craft markets, open air theatre and amateur theatrical shows and live music in the locality.
