Whether your ideal holiday involves lacing up your walking boots and exploring the coastal footpath and Cornish countryside, sitting in a restaurant eating that days catch, or wiggling your toes in the sand as you tuck into piping hot fish and chips, a holiday staying in one of our cottages in Looe will not disappoint. There are countless reasons why you should make Looe the destination for your next holiday. Below are our five favourite things about this pretty Cornish coastal town.
Beaches - Looe may be popular but having seven - yes, seven! - beaches in and around town provides enough space for everyone, even in the height of the summer holiday. East Looe has soft golden sand and is within walking distance of the town and Banjo Pier. The beach has a seafront promenade and is a favourite with families for safe swimming and easy access to amenities. Millendreath Beach is best visited at low tide, while Plaidy Beach is a peaceful alternative if you don’t mind a bit of a walk. Hannafore Beach is dog-friendly, while Talland Bay and Polperro are both incredibly picturesque.
Walking - The South West Coastal Path is one of the finest long-distance footpaths in Britain, stretching for 630 scenic miles from Poole Harbour to Minehead. The stretch from Looe to Talland Bay is just gorgeous, and it’s possible to continue to Polperro and catch the bus back if your legs aren’t up to a return journey. If it’s scorching hot or you fancy a change of scenery, then head inland to the cool shade of Kilminorth Woods and Giant’s Hedge.
Attractions - Looe has a lot to offer holidaymakers at any time of the year. Looe attractions include Looe Island - a nature reserve accessed by boat, The Monkey Sanctuary, and the Old Guildhall Museum and Gaol. Nearby, you can visit the Eden Project or the beautiful gardens at Lanhydrock, hire a canoe or go windsurfing, or get your thrills at Adrenaline Quarry where there is a zip line, giant swing and waterpark.
Day Trips - Looe’s location makes it ideal as a base from which to explore the south-east of Cornwall. The historic naval city of Plymouth is only 20 miles away with excellent museums, shopping, cinemas and sightseeing. Don’t miss the view from the Hoe and the site of the Mayflower Steps in the Barbican, where the original boat of pilgrims left England for America in 1620. Another day could include a trip inland to beautiful Bodmin Moor and Colliford Lake, cycling in the Tamar Valley or walking in Dartmoor National Park. Staying in Looe means you can plan your dream holiday, incorporating the city, coast and countryside.
Festivals and Events - It seems like there is always a reason to celebrate in Looe and the surrounding area. The friendly town hosts many events and festivals throughout the year including Looe Carnival, which runs for the last week in July, the Looe Raft Race, Looe Live! music and art festival, and Christmas festivals and markets.
It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for a fun holiday in the sunshine with your friends, escaping for a romantic break with your other half, or squeezing the kids and the dog into the car to get away during the school holidays, Looe never disappoints. Unlike some coastal towns which shut down over autumn and winter, Looe is vibrant all year long. The excellent amenities make Looe ideal for a Cornwall cottage holiday, with shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants that appeal to all tastes and budgets.
