Remember your binoculars as the cliffs are home to an impressive number of birds, and a regular walking festival is held in April. Boscastle's pristine landscape is managed in part by the National Trust and, as it is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with Sites of Specific Scientific Interest, is totally unspoiled by development.
Foodies should schedule their visit for October when the Boscastle Festival of Real Food is run, but even a scone in the café overlooking the harbour or a meal in a local pub is a culinary treat. Why not take a boat trip and gain a different perspective of the coastline? Kids love paddling in the harbour when the tide is out, poking around nooks and crevices with a stick, enjoying the Bathing Pool and being thrilled by the Devil's Bellows. Cornwall has a wealth of museums but possibly none more intriguing than the Museum of Witchcraft which is nestled inconspicuously in the harbour amongst traditional white washed Cornish fisherman's cottages.
The sheltered harbour and central position of Boscastle makes it an ideal base for a self-catering holiday in Cornwall. It has the right balance of shops and restaurants to make it convenient without being crowded, is close to some of North Cornwall's main attractions, and is so pretty you'll find it hard to leave.
