Lambton Cottage is on the edge of one of the most popular towns in the Peak District National Park. The spacious house is surrounded by gorgeous Derbyshire countryside yet is close enough to walk into Bakewell in just a few minutes. It sleeps up to ten guests in five bedrooms, and with two bedrooms having en suites and four that can be either double or twin rooms, it has a versatile layout to suit any family or group of friends.
Being in walking distance to the centre of Bakewell gives you the ability to enjoy this lovely town without having to worry about parking. Bakewell is not as grand as nearby Buxton, but it was good enough for Jane Austen to use it for inspiration for the town of Lambton in “Pride and Prejudice”, with Pemberley being based on nearby Chatsworth House.
Bakewell has an excellent range of amenities including a supermarket, numerous independent shops, an interesting local museum in a house that dates back to 1543, and some great restaurants. You will find several excellent bakeries specialising in the town’s famous delicacy, Bakewell Pudding. We won’t tell you which is the best - one of the pleasures is trying them all to decide for yourself!
You can easily find everything you need in Bakewell, but you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t go to Buxton at least once during your holiday. Like all the great spa towns, Buxton has some wonderful Georgian buildings including a grand Crescent and Pavilion with Gardens. It is larger than Bakewell with an even wider array of shops, pubs and amenities and if you don’t want to order online and have your groceries delivered, there are several supermarkets to choose from here.
One of the biggest attractions in the Peak District is Chatsworth House. This magnificent stately home is one of the finest in Europe and houses a wealth of treasures. The grounds are as impressive as the house, with a mix of parklands, formal gardens, a maze, lakes and fountains. It is an exceptionally well-managed attraction with something for everyone, including a playground and farmyard for the kids, a seasonal calendar of events, shops, cafes and a restaurant.
As lovely as attractions like Chatsworth are, the landscape is the real draw of the Peak District National Park, and there are plenty of ways you can get out and enjoy it. The Monsal Trail is excellent and suitable for walkers and cyclists of all abilities, while Froggatt, Curbar and Baslow Edges provide more of a challenge for experienced hikers and climbers. There are lots of opportunities for mountain biking, if that’s your preferred mode of transport - just ask at Hassop Station where you can get good advice from local riders and hire a bike if you didn’t bring your own.
The variety of attractions in the Peak District makes it possible to keep everyone happy, and Lambton Cottage is a beautiful place to stay while you’re spending time doing things you love with the people closest to you.
