Hillside Cottage is a jewel of a holiday home tucked away in Wirksworth in the Peak District National Park. Built over a century ago, the owner has carefully transformed it into a stylish escape for couples who appreciate a fresh, modern decor beautifully mixed with original features. Being set on a hill means it has wonderful views over the town and surrounding countryside, and it is only a ten-minute walk to excellent pubs and restaurants.
Wirksworth is a charming Peak District town with a creative, artistic vibe. The buildings are made from local stone quarried only a few miles away and include a fantastic mixture of independent cafes, restaurants and artisan shops, as well as a French bistro, quirky real ale pub (selling vinyl!) art-house cinema and wine bar - just some of the excellent amenities on the doorstep of Hillside Cottage! The town’s layout grew organically with the population so you will find narrow lanes and alleys that gradually widen into residential streets and countryside. If you are there in June, then you will see the town well decorated as part of the annual Well Dressing - a custom unique to the Peak District. There has been a regular market held in Wirksworth since 1306, with market day currently being Tuesday, as well as a monthly Farmers Market selling great local produce.
There are fantastic footpaths and cycling trails around Wirksworth, including the High Peak Trail, the Derwent Valley Heritage Trail, and Portway. The latter of these follows the route of Romans and the Iron Age settlers before them. The serene landscape around Wirksworth belies a busy industrial past which included lead mining, and you can see remnants of this on a three-mile walk that starts near Black Rocks and includes the bridge over the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway yard. You can find out more about the local history at the Heritage Centre which can currently be found on North End.
Peak District attractions are plentiful. Try sailing on Carsington Water or take a ride on a steam train through the beautiful Ecclesbourne Valley. Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House are both top choices for a memorable day out, or take some time to browse the shops in Bakewell, Buxton and Matlock. Derby, Nottingham and Chesterfield are all within an easy half an hour’s drive so you could not ask for a better location.
The Peak District National Park is a fantastic holiday destination at any time of year. Stroll through flower-strewn meadows in spring and summer, under gold and russet leaves in autumn or over crunchy frosted paths in winter. You won’t have to look far to find an unforgettable view.
