Great Calva is the largest of nine stunning self-catering properties at Monkhouse Hill, close to the Northern Fells of the Lake District National Park. The owners have skillfully created a holiday cottage which can comfortably accommodate up to 12 people (plus two cots) in 5-Star Gold standard style. There is lots of indoor and outdoor living space where everyone can congregate and socialise while the sleeping areas are divided so that you can enjoy your own family time. Great Calva is ideal for going on holiday with your extended family and friends, and can be either booked independently or together with other properties on the five-acre site to accommodate larger groups.
Monkhouse Hill is a former 17th Century farm with incredible views of the Eden Valley. It is at the base of the Caldbeck Fells with enviable walking and cycling opportunities from the front door. The Northern Fells are peaceful and relaxed, and surprisingly un-touristy when you consider that the scenic beauty of the Lake District attracts over 15 million visitors every year! Keen walkers will appreciate the challenge of climbing Skiddaw or Blencathra which offer spectacular views in any season, whilst the local peaks of High Pike and Carrock offer more gentle climbs. High Pike and Carrock are also close by, as is Skiddaw. Mountain bikers and cyclists will also find lots of choice to suit their style and ability, making it simple to enjoy being in this incredible landscape.
It would be a shame if you left the Lake District without experiencing the views from the water so set aside a morning to journey around Ullswater on a vintage steamer or set sail on Buttermere, Crummock Water or Loweswater, where the woods around the lake are home to energetic red squirrels. Alternatively, spend some time enjoying the beauty of Bassenthwaite Lake national nature reserve.
Your holiday doesn’t have to be all fell-walking, mountain biking, fishing and golf. If your dream holiday involves excellent shopping, centuries of history, plenty of delicious food or all of the above, then you will love it here. Penrith and Carlisle are both an easy drive from Monkhouse Hill and have a great choice of high street names and independent shops and boutiques, as well as restaurants, pubs and other entertainment. There are around 20 pubs and restaurants within a 25-minute radius of the cottage, including Britain’s first cooperative pub at nearby Hesket Newmarket. The cottages are ideally placed for day trips to the Southern Lakes , the undiscovered Solway Coast or Hadrian’s Wall.
With so much to see and do, you will have no trouble keeping all of your party happily entertained. In fact, you do not even need to leave the property because the owners of Monkhouse Hill have created a relaxing environment with an indoor games room and landscaped grounds that include a pond, stream, woodland and an outdoor adventure playground. The owners are justifiably proud of their award-winning status that will enable you to plan a holiday that everyone will love. You can find out more details about all of the available accommodation on the owner's website.
