Cloven Stone Cottage is a charming self-catering holiday cottage near Caldbeck in Cumbria, sitting on the border of the Eden Valley and the Northern Fells of the Lake District National Park. The cottage comfortably sleeps four people in two bedrooms and is a favourite with families as well as with couples who appreciate the 5-star touches like a hot-tub on the private balcony, and the far-reaching views. Cloven Stone Cottage was only built in 2000 but feels as if it has been a part of Monkhouse Hill, the estate in which it sits, forever. It is one of nine luxurious holiday properties, more of which you can see on the owner’s website.
Monkhouse Hill is the perfect base for exploring the northern lakes. It is around three miles from Caldbeck, a traditional village with an arched stone bridge, Norman church, holy well, and a converted mill that now houses shops and a restaurant. The location of the farm and cottages also make it simple to get to Keswick, Penrith, Cockermouth and Carlisle, while its proximity just 15 minutes from the M6 puts the southern lakes, Hadrian’s Wall and even parts of Scotland within reach for a fun-filled day of shopping and sightseeing.
The beauty of the lakes, fells and mountains are what draw so many people to the Lake District, and you are spoiled for choice when you stay at Cloven Stone Cottage. The estate sits in a peaceful area north of Keswick at the base of the Caldbeck Fells. In addition to the five acres of landscaped grounds at Monkhouse Hill, you can stretch your legs on climbs at Catbells and Blencathra, or explore nearby Warnell Fell, High Peak or Carrock. If you follow the route from Mosedale to Great Calva and Knott, then you may not see another soul on the way, and while the footpaths around Longlands Fell, Lowthwaite Fell, and Brae Fell are more popular than Mosedale, they are no less beautiful. There are designated footpaths around Ullswater and Derwentwater, providing a flatter alternative to the fells.
Lake District attractions that are easily accessible from Cloven Stone Cottage include Honister Slate Mine, Rheged Discovery Centre which screens iMax films, Theatre by the Lake and Go Ape Whinlatter. You can visit a farm, wildlife centre or aquarium, see vintage cars and paddle steamers, or spend a few hours relaxing at the North Lakes Spa in Penrith, where guests at Monkhouse Hill have complimentary use of the gym, pool and steam room.
You might spend the other 51 weeks of the year working hard and taking care of everyone else, but at Monkhouse Hill, you can relax in comfort and enjoy a perfect Lake District holiday.
